2nd Entry nursing at YORK 2014

World Canada CA Programs

Hello,

I am starting nursing at York University in September. I was just looking for some help from previous students as to how I could prepare myself. I want to know where is the ideal location for me to find a place to live. I don't want to live on res but don't know the york region at all. Anyone have any suggestions as to what will be a convenient place to live and manage both school and hospital.

Thanks,

Ahsan

Hi there, I will also be attending in the Fall. Are you from Toronto? It might help if I can get an idea of how well you understand the city. I personally would never choose to live near York. I'd rather have a little bit of a commute and live in a neighbourhood that is more pedestrian friendly, safe, cafes, etc. Also, do you have a car or will you be relying on public transportation?

Hi,

Will you be in the nursing program as well? I am not familiar with North York at all even tho I have been to toronto many times. Why wouldn't you want to live near york lol something i'm missing? which surrounding neighbourhoods should I be looking at? So I'm from Ottawa and I do have a car but I am not planning to bring it to toronto as it would be hard to deal with traffic and parking. I'd rather rely on the transportation system.

Thanks for the help :)

Yea I knew about Jane and Finch and there's alot of people warning me about living in that area. Bloor West village seems like a really nice place to live, however, it seems very far. Its about an hour of a bus ride away! I don't think that's worth it for me to live that far.

i also want to make sure that I'm situated in between the school and the hospital where I will also be spending alot of time. Do you have any idea which hospital I might end up at as a 2nd entry nursing student? and which other locations closer to the university (keele campus) would u recommend?

Thanks for your help :)

No problem! I think we submit a form with our preference in terms of location of hospital (there are different general zones to choose from). Other than that, you really could end up anywhere in the GTA (there are no guarantees). There are so many hospitals in the city, so it's pretty hard to guess where we might end up.

In case it effects your decision - someone in the program mentioned in the York 2nd entry thread that classes are only 3 days per week, placement one day per week, and one day per week off (plus the weekend). So, maybe it is worth spending some extra time on the bus and living in a better neighbourhood since most days you will not need to go to campus. But that depends on what you are going to do with your days off. Maybe it is worth it to you to live near the school so you can go to campus to study each day and be surrounded by other York students doing the same. Sorry I can't really recommend any neighbourhoods around there though because I'm honestly not very familiar. I can tell you that it's pretty suburban so you'd want to find a place close to a bus stop, and ideally not more than one bus away from the school. If you end up needing to transfer busses that can add a lot of time to your commute and be pretty annoying, especially in the winter!
