Hello All,
I am currently in a frustrating situation. I am 1 semester away from being able to apply for the nursing program in Georgia. I recently made the stupid decision to drive after drinking and was arrested for DUI. This will make my second conviction, my first was 6 1/2 years ago when I was 21. I am now 27 and I really regret my recent decision and have been stressing and worried about if this would prevent me from having a career in nursing. I have considered changing majors, but anything I am interested in is hospital related and will require the same background checks. I guess my question is, what are my odds with this being my second conviction, should I give up on my goals to become a nurse???? I hear GA is really strict on this.

I won't give details, but I know someone who was DWI and had a bad crash and someone in the other car was harmed, and they were accepted into my schools program. No idea if the person will be hired anywhere, though.

From what I've read it's a case by case decision. The hospitals you'd be rotating through are the ones that stipulate what they will accept. It also depends on whether or not you'd qualify for state licensure.
There is usually a designated group consisting of a representative from the nursing program administration and someone representing the affiliated hospitals--and they make the decisions on a case by case basis. Also, you have to look at the regulations for state licensure in your area.
Wow.....can you share the school???

According to my school policy, they will admit you to the program but will not guarantee that the state board of nursing will approve your application for licensure. You should probably be talking to your state's board of nursing instead of a particular school.
