NCLEX-RN review book before even starting school?

Published

Hey everyone :)

I've been hearing that some nursing students are reviewing with the nclex-rn review book before even starting nursing school. I was just wondering why and also if it's necessary. A friend of mine is in an RN program and doesn't seem to think it's needed at my point (I start my first semester in a couple weeks)

Thanks :paw:

It's to help with test taking skills. Nursing school tests are different in that almost every answer is correct, but you have to choose the BEST answer. The NCLEX-RN review books help with selecting the best answer and the rationales behind choosing that answer. If I were you, I would pick up the book called Test Taking Skills: Test-Taking for Beginning Nursing Students. I am in the same situation as you, I start classes in a couple of weeks, and reading through this book really helped with anxiety and the questions that I had. Good luck and let us know how your first day goes!

Honestly, and I don't mean to be blunt... you'll waste time trying to memorize things you don't understand and have never heard of and it won't prepare you a bit for nursing education.

The exam is a summary of learning that shows general competency in a wide variety of areas.

Simmer down, Buy your first nursing book early and tear through that sucker, you'll be sick of it before you know... and they'll be 7 more books competing for your attention once you start. The exam will be the furthest from your mind until the last semester.

Your test time will come, you can't rush it, but it doesn't hurt to read the corresponding chapters as your introduced to them, it may or may not help on tests.

Hi Zookeeper3!

I completely agree!!

I think it's pointless to get the book too, but i heard some of my future nursing classmates yapping about it, so i decided to grab it. You're right.... i got an nclex-rn book at the library and it's pretty pointless. I guess I'm just wondering why my classmates seem to think it's an essential? I guess this is just one of those times that I shouldn't always listen to what others say lol :D

Thanks :)

I never used a NCLEX Study book until I was about 1/2 way through my first semester. I use them as a study tool. Many of them are broken down into sections (peds, OB, older adult, mental health, etc.). I open the book to the section I am currently studying in class and in addition to the materials from my course, I study from the guide and do questions from the guide. When I started to do that, it improved my understanding of how the material I am learning will be a part of my clinical practice when I am done. It also raised my test grades.
