NCLEX Number of Questions and Clarification

ALL STUDENTS PLEASE READ. I teach a semester long course to prep our grads for NCLEX. Please read this entire post carefully. Nurses Announcements Archive Article

Updated:

The NCLEX adapts to your skill level. The first questions that are presented are determining your ability level. Once that ability level is determined, the questions are presented in increasing level of difficulty/decreasing difficulty until you have answered enough questions for the computer to determine (with 95% statistical certainty) that you have met the passing standard.

The minimum number of questions you will have is 75 (60 questions plus 15 pilot items). You will not be able to distinguish pilot items from "real" items. SO, if you get 265 items, that means the computer has not yet determined that you have met the passing standard at the 95% confidence level. There is no random number of candidates that get the exam with 265 questions- that is a myth.

You will not be able to tell whether you have passed by the number of questions you get!

The test is 6 hours long, and you should take your time. You have paid $200 for that test seat- USE IT!

Rushing through the questions or rapid guessing will most likely lead to failure, because each one you get wrong due to guessing means the next question is easier, and then on and on, until you fail because you are guessing at them all. Take your time to think each question through.

You will not leave the exam feeling good- the test challenges every bit of you, so you will feel tired and unsure of yourself. The way you feel does not equate into passing or failing. You cannot judge. Wait for your results.

NCLEX is given throughout the US and its territories, so the same format is used and the same question bank is used across the US. You do not have to take the exam in the same state where you are applying for licensure.

These are some resources for NCLEX prep that I like (no monetary incentive for sharing).

NCSBN's Review:

Kaplan

I am impressed with the strategy that is taught in the Kaplan course.

Lastly, you must manage anxiety. Pay attention to strategies to reduce anxiety. Approach each question as a new patient- one at a time, and focus completely on that question (patient).

Do not get distracted by thoughts of passing or failing, or by focusing on the number of questions you have had. Just keep going, one at a time, until the test ends. Then- be good to yourself while you wait for results. Remember you will not be able to accurately judge whether you passed by the way you feel. The test challenges you and you will not feel great when it is over.

Best wishes for success!

Dear Theresa, and others-

Reading the posts can have 2 effects,I think. Either they validate that everyone approaches the NCLEX with some fear, or they scare the &%$#@@ out of you....

Clearly, if you completed nursing school, and have been preparing for the test, you have already passed some major challenges.

Instead of focusing on your anxiety(remember from mental health-a little anxiety is a good thing).....focus on the strengths that you bring to the exam. The exam tests your knowledge yes, but moreso, your ability to think through and solve problems.

To do that effectively, you need (besides nursing school) oxygen and glucose so your brain works- yes?.....Breathe-slow down----look away from the computer for a moment, and then think the problem through...

Make sure you have some protein in the meal you eat before you go in to the exam...protein makes the carbs last longer.

You have 6 hours to complete the exam, and you get 2 breaks. If you are too scaed to think, take the breaks, slow yourself down, and move on.

It does not matter how many questions you get. Don't psych yourself out by focusing on how many questions you have. As long as you are getting questions, you are still in the game...

When you are finished, you will not feel successful- so don't expect to feel like you did well. Everyone feels challenged and unsure after the exam. If you do the best you can, what more can you expect of yourself?

So, focus on your strengths, remember to breathe and use your thinking, and take each question as a new question, without judging how you are doing by whatever number it is.

Good luck to you....and.. breathe.............breathe...............breathe.....:)

I'm new here...and about to take my SB and am scared shtless...I've been reading all the responses about the test...

I'm taking the Montana SB...........anyone else??

I took the NCLEX on Saturday, only had 75 questions, got a question that my 3rd grader could have answered at the very end, and spent the last few days certain and despondent that I failed. Well, I PASSED! The lesson here is don't believe what you read about if you get an easy question at the end, it means you failed. Buying into that has caused me a lot of heartache. Assume the best unless you hear the worst. Good luck to everyone. And thanks again for the supportive words.

I wanted to mention to all preparing for nclex to check out learningext.com. This is the same company that writes the nclex. They cover all the basic areas that will be on the test, with study outlines. I took the test yesterday and have been freaking out! I think I didn't pass and I am really upset. But what can you do but take it again? Good luck to you all!

Hey Catherine, I sure appreciate your notes you have sent us they seem to help me relax some hearing some nice comfortating words. I'm studying from 5 NCLEX books and the CD plus a NCLEX EXCEL study prep class...I also like reading everyones success stories thats comfortating also...I have 4 days left to review...I justr keep taking tests...and anwsering questions...and love the rationals...........so hopefully I will be ready :stone ...we shall see...but I just wanyted to say THANKS.......your words of wisdom are soothing.....................THRESSA (( I take the Montana SB the 20th))

Tina, use Saunders as it gives a better review of the correct and incorrect answers. This is the one that we used in my school, and all have passed that used it..............

Suzanne,

Could you please tell me ,if I will finish to study my new books:Saunders,NSNA, does it make sense to review questions from the older books(KAPLAN 2000, etc..). I am a foreign educated nurse, and when I read here how well prepared for the nclex every student from the school is (lots of tests : Hesi etc..), I am getting really scared. I took the CGFNS. How is the CGFNS related to the NCLEX. Can you help me in this question ?

Thanks a lot!

Moni

MONI, I felt that several books really helped me as it gave many different views on subjects...stuff I didn't know I looked up...someone told me to do as many questions as I possibly could...the old books may help some but with all the advanced terminology, procedures ect...I feel a new book is essential...I do feel Saunders was great...another good one is Lippencotts review by Diane M. Billings....I have a total of 5 books...prebably to many but I used them all....I also have Mosby's and a book by Stein...I don't recommend you buy as many as I have...some of mine were goven to me...I plan on giving mine to my daughter as she will be testing in a year...

I wish you much luck...I cannot help you with the question of the CGFNS

This really helped me...they do have an online course review which gives you scnerios and a good reviews of pharm and systems....it was great and easy...but the reviews were good...cut all the junk out and really hit the things you really need to remember and know....... it comes with a book, a CD and online references and tests...........

GOOD LUCK MONI.........when do you test...?? Thressa

I took my NCLEX yesterday. This waiting is KILLING me. I got 75 questions, and it just shut off....I did NOT feel good about it at all. I've heard that you either did very well, or VERY bad and the way I feel about it is I did really awful. Almost all of my questions were about determining priority. This test was so much harder than I thought it would be! But it is nice to read these postings and know that I am not the only one that has felt this way. Send some prayers my way!

I to felt the test was hard...in alot of areas but soso in others...easy in a few and totallt lost in some areas...the waiting is totally the pits...I had alot of MS questions...priority, delegation...some preds, new born maturnity. I left the center feeling numb, not being sure how I felt I felt good about some of the test and stupied in others...I absolutely hate the select all that apply...I only had 4, I must have gotten some right because then I stopped getting them..............I"ll be thinking of you...crossing my fingers and saying a prayer or two...........I'll bet you did fine and passed...but the waiting is agony.....GOOD LUCK TO YOU.....................relax some....get a movie or two......hey if I can pass that blasted test I know you can... ? later THRESSA
