NCLEX Number of Questions and Clarification

ALL STUDENTS PLEASE READ. I teach a semester long course to prep our grads for NCLEX. Please read this entire post carefully.

Updated:

The NCLEX adapts to your skill level. The first questions that are presented are determining your ability level. Once that ability level is determined, the questions are presented in increasing level of difficulty/decreasing difficulty until you have answered enough questions for the computer to determine (with 95% statistical certainty) that you have met the passing standard.

The minimum number of questions you will have is 75 (60 questions plus 15 pilot items). You will not be able to distinguish pilot items from "real" items. SO, if you get 265 items, that means the computer has not yet determined that you have met the passing standard at the 95% confidence level. There is no random number of candidates that get the exam with 265 questions- that is a myth.

You will not be able to tell whether you have passed by the number of questions you get!

The test is 6 hours long, and you should take your time. You have paid $200 for that test seat- USE IT!

Rushing through the questions or rapid guessing will most likely lead to failure, because each one you get wrong due to guessing means the next question is easier, and then on and on, until you fail because you are guessing at them all. Take your time to think each question through.

You will not leave the exam feeling good- the test challenges every bit of you, so you will feel tired and unsure of yourself. The way you feel does not equate into passing or failing. You cannot judge. Wait for your results.

NCLEX is given throughout the US and its territories, so the same format is used and the same question bank is used across the US. You do not have to take the exam in the same state where you are applying for licensure.

These are some resources for NCLEX prep that I like (no monetary incentive for sharing).

NCSBN's Review:

Kaplan

I am impressed with the strategy that is taught in the Kaplan course.

Lastly, you must manage anxiety. Pay attention to strategies to reduce anxiety. Approach each question as a new patient- one at a time, and focus completely on that question (patient).

Do not get distracted by thoughts of passing or failing, or by focusing on the number of questions you have had. Just keep going, one at a time, until the test ends. Then- be good to yourself while you wait for results. Remember you will not be able to accurately judge whether you passed by the way you feel. The test challenges you and you will not feel great when it is over.

Best wishes for success!

Help please someone, I am in the final few weeks of school, and all of a sudden my nerves are just frazzeled :uhoh21: I am not sure why. Also any tips for getting ready for the NCLEX would be greatly appreciated. I just feel like I am not going to make it. I have not felt this way all year.

What I tell people is continue doing what you've done so far. You have made it this far with your study habits and it to late to change it or it will throw your routine off. Try getting more sleep and eat well. Take care of yourself and ignore those little things that nag at ya. You can catch back up with life after graduation, take care of yourself first, its okay to be selfish. Do not feed off everyone elses anxiety, its theirs not yours. The NCLEX is not going anywhere so worry about it after graduation. All of us that are nurses know that by the last final the girls no longer wore makeup and had pony tails instead of frilly hair and us guys didn't shave and wore hats. You are almost there, keep it up I truly do understand how you feel.:crying2: :rotfl: (nursing students are all bipolar)

I feel you..........:uhoh3: I took the test this morning and feel the same exact way! This is a true nightmare.. I hope you pass and wish you peace while you wait. I will not find out my results until Tuesday, I think.. unless of course they count weekends as business days. Keep thinking positive as I am trying to also. PS I got 75 too!

They do not count the week-end as a business day, apparently, as I took my exam on Thursday and they are not there-STILL!!! I think I have checked the website about 10 times already!!! I guess mine will be there on Monday and yours will be there on Tuesday. Man the waiting is the hardest!

We should remember that "patience is a virtue"- I have tried to teach my own children that and I am not the best example of a virtuous person at this point :uhoh3:

Anyway, best of luck!

Congrats on passing!!! :balloons:

I took my NCLEX yesterday and I am going INSANE!!!!! It shut off at 75 and I was wishing they gave me more ques. I am completely convinced I failed. I either had questions I could answer, some I could narrow down to two and guess, and some I just had no idea about the answer because I just didnt know the information. I am worried about the questions that I could answer because I feel if I was able to answer them then they were easy and I failed. This is the worse anxiety. Any word of encouragement :uhoh3:

I understand completely RN80, I have been trying to get results all day but the website is temporarily not working and when I called on the telephone it told me that I should call back in 1 hour. Even though I am not following my own advice. Keep thinking positive let the negativity go by the wayside cause it will drive you NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found out my results this am and I PASSED!!!! Prayer really helps

I have to pass A hesi exam in order to take the nclex-pn boards. I didn't pass the first time 69.9 I have one more chance. I am studying nclex-pn review books, and taking practice test at school. If I go under the Hesi.com site I can't find any PN review items just RN. Can you tell me any sites that have Hesi review courses for PN. I need a 850 on the hesi and really want to be able to take the boards. I can take the 2nd semester at school for the Assoc. RN course, which I am. But I really want to be a lpn first.

Help :crying2:

Hey to all! I am sooooo worried about my results. I took my Nclex friday and I am living a nightmare! I had the dreadful 265 questions. I have always made the good grades in school and passed the way over the 900 HESI score they recommend. I have done the many many thousand of questions and went into it knowing that it would cut off at 75 and I would feel confident. Instead I am feeling very worried and upset that this may be the one time that I don't make the cut. Our state (NC) does not do the quick results or with pearsonvue so I have to call our state board on Tuesday and every second and day after! Please pray for me!!!
