Hello. Did any of y'all become licensed in Texas by going to school in another state and while still living there apply for a Texas license and take the NCLEX in that particular state? I currently live in Kentucky and will be taking the NCLEX soon and am hoping to move to Texas later this year. I was wondering if anyone here actually got licensed in Texas while having gone to school and tested elsewhere. Would it be easier to get liscensed here and apply for reciprocity? I am trying to contact the Texas BON with my questions but it's been difficult to actually speak to anyone and the website says it is possible to do this but they basically say send us your application and money and we will let you know if you are approved or not. I'd kind of like to know before I sent my money but like I said, I'm having trouble speaking to the BON about this:o . If anyone happened to become a Texas nurse in the above manner I'd appreciate hearing how it went for you. Thanks

I'm in the same boat that you are. I'm graduating in May from a nursing school in Georgia but I'm relocating to Texas soon after. According to Pearson (the one's that give the NCLEX) you can apply for you license in Texas and take the NCLEX anywhere in the world. You don't have to take the test in the same state that you apply for your license. Look at your NCLEX exam candidate bulletin or on the website's bulletin...its under Scheduling procedures for the NCLEX. " You may schedule an appointment to take your NCLEX examination at any center. You do not have to take the examination in the same jursidiction in which you are seeking licensure."
If you plan on applying for your license in Texas Do It NOW! Its a long process on the Board's end because they require FBI checks and other background checks. Check on their website for the application and instructions. Hope all this helps! Good luck !

Yes it is a long process. You must get FBI fingerprint cards done at a local police station and send them along with your application.
I believe I waited about two months back when I applied, but the fingerprint card process was fairly new to TX and I've heard they've gotten a little faster now that they've been doing it for a few years.
Nonetheless, get the process started ASAP, and yes you can take the NCLEX in KY even though you are applying for TX licensure.
Just keep in mind that you won't have a KY license so be sure that you will be actually living in TX when the time comes because you won't be able to work in KY unless you apply for a KY license.

I attended LVN school in California and completed that nursing program in October 2005. I moved to Texas in November 2005 and took NCLEX in Texas for California licensure (after all, my initial paperwork had been sent to the California board of nursing). I passed NCLEX and then applied to endorse my new California license into Texas.
