we had a review question today about a Bun level of 24 and digoxin toxicity
in our school we had a normal Bun level listed as 10-30 but
clinically that is to high many hospitals use the value of 10-20 for BUN.
What was the normal level you were taught and if possible do you have any links ?
In the question 24 was considered a way to high BUN and the person was dig toxic
If we had gone by what our school value we would have missed this nclex question because we would have considered 24 a normal BUN

I was taught that a normal BUN was between 8 and 25.

:yeahthat:
Also, some mnemonic somewhere taught that hot dog buns come 8 to a pack and the age group that eats hot dogs is between 8 and 25.
Something silly like that. But it sure helped me on my NCLEX!
Most lab values have a range I've noticed that is +/- by a small margin. 25 is in the range, but it's at the far range. Toxic though?
Anyway, since learning of the little mnemonic game, I've never had a problem w/ BUN. Whatever gets you through, huh? :studyowl:

We were taught that the normal range was 8-21. An older adult >90 is 10-31. But I would think that NCLEX would go by the younger adult range. I don't have a link but we did use a lab book that had this as a normal range. Our lab book is Davis's Comprehensive Handbook of Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests.
