NCLEX anxiety 2nd time. Need advice/help

Published

Hi, this is my first post to allnurses.com. I am starting to freak out. I took the NCLEX the first time in early June after taking a HESI review course through my college. I failed. I recently competed the Learning Extension review course online, and am currently enrolled in a two week Kaplan classroom course. I am so nervous, and depressed over this whole situation. I want to pass this test so I can get on with my life and my career. Does anyone know any statistics that show pass/fail rates for taking the test the second time? I am scheduled to retake the NCLEX the end of July. My job has already postponed once, but I don't know if they will allow me to postpone again, if I fail again. I am sorry to ramble, but words cannot even explain how extremely nervous I am. I am so stressed and about to explode. Please help, passing this test means the world to me. Thanks.

Hi Jen,

I to just found out Saturday I did not pass and I will be retaking in 45 days and my job to is holding my start date till Oct. You will be fine you did tons to prepare, I have already begun studying again. I heard Saunders online review is really helpful and so is the Mosby CAT. Don't freak out. Trust me I know that s not easy. I have been crying for 4 days straight, can't eat, sleep, etc.., Good luck I will pray for you and keep me posted :balloons:

I think that it is almost more important to learn how to relax than it is to study. All of that information is stored away in your mind somewhere and when you are anxious you can't access the information. People who are anxious do irrational things all the time. How can you possibly think right when you are freaking out.

I would figure out ways to calm your mind. Find what works for you and practice it so you can use it on the test day. Learn how to control your thoughts to keep from working yourself up. Try anything, a deep breathe, screaming at yourself "STOP" when an anxiety provoking thought enters your mind, yoga. I really believe that being able to relax is half the battle. Unless you really didn't try in nursing school (which I doubt) that information is in your brain somewhere!

Good Luck!

Jen & New Nurse Grad 2005-I wish you both good luck & will be crossing my fingers for you both! You can do this! :)

Jen-my school also had a HESI review course two days after graduation, but I decided not to do it. Instead, I decided to buy a bunch of Q & A books for NCLEX that came with CD roms-I bought Mosby, Lippincott, Saunders, & Incredibly Easy & liked all of them, but would honestly say Saunders was the best cuz it went over a lot of content that I never even saw in nursing school (by this I mean I learned material just by doing the questions & reading why the answers were right or wrong). Between my nursing school graduation on May 21 & my NCLEX date of July 1, I answered around 5000 questions this way, by using the CD roms. I would put my CD roms in "study mode" & just answer one question at a time & then read the rationales of why the answers were right or not. (This was also recommended by Suzanne4-the moderator here-she gave us great advice about that! :) Also, if I ran across something I didn't recognize I would look it up & read about it briefly in my medical/nursing dictionary. This study plan worked for me-I just passed my NCLEX with 75 questions. If you have any questions about how to study, please feel free to PM me. I'm so happy I passed & am an RN, I love helping others study! :)
