The kit includes application and a lot of other paperwork. Volunteering and other experiences will look your application and when they look at your resume at the interview. The interview is really laid back, the two naval nurses (one many be retired) are really nice and the majority of the interview they will be answering your questions.

Are you in nursing school or already a nurse? The Nurse Candidate Program is for students in BSN programs (that are accredited) and have >3.0 GPA's. If you're already an RN with a BSN then you'd apply for a direct accession. Not sure what the DA application consists of, but the NCP for nursing students is basically composed of personal statement, lots of security clearance, MEPS physicals, interviews with Navy nurses, reference letters, and a few other things.
Volunteer work is always good. You'll submit a resume which everyone who looks at your packet will see.
Interview questions are typical as with any other job interview, but I found mine to be a bit more relaxed than others I've done.
