NAU Spring 2012 Hopefuls

Hi everyone, I'm Lily. I am applying to NAU's 2012 program and was hoping for any advice with the HESI A2 (what books to study since I've heard many bad reviews about the review)

I know it's some time away but I am shooting to get in my first time applying!

Also, I was hoping get a ballpark of how many people will be applying for this start date.

So, I went to the information session. There is still no great information on the Kaplan exam; however, she did say that students applying from the Flagstaff area would be the first to take the exam (before we do). This is great, because she said she would be able to tell us their average scores. As for the application, she said it may be up in a week.

I also asked for last Fall and Springs application counts. This past Fall had 150 and Spring had 96 (So nervous! Only 20 get in).

We just need that application! She said it would have more detailed info on the exam.

K- was that 150 applied in the spring for this coming fall? That sounds like the number I heard. Just curious. Best wishes. Hopefully you guys will be a semester behind me.

Yes, there were 150 applications for the March deadline to start in the Fall. I'm assuming you were apart of this? That's something to be proud of, congrats!

Yes, I will be in the cohort starting in EXACTLY one month :clpty: I'll check in from time to time (not as often as I do now I'm sure) so feel free to PM me if you have questions along the way. They're changing things a little so I don't know how much help I'll be but though.

I see that its the 91 question test. Does anybody have information on the test? Have you found any good threads with the insight? I am so excited to start applying! It seems so tough and I have 3 classes in progress this fall so I have to rock this exam. =D

Some basic information regarding the Kaplan test. I haven't found too much in the way of specific study material but I will quote some general info from another university's pdf.

Kaplan's Admission Test is a tool to determine if students have the academic skills necessary to

perform effectively in a school of nursing. The Admission Test is a 91-question online, multiple-choice

test that evaluates the basic reading, math, writing and science skills of students seeking entry into a

nursing program leading to RN licensure. The test can be used to determine acceptance into a nursing

program or it can be administered to already admitted students to identify areas in reading, writing,

math and science that need remediation.

The reading section contains 22 questions to be answered in 45 minutes. Candidates read four

passages and answer questions that measure the essential skills required for reading:

  • Determining the logic of a passage
  • Comprehending details
  • Drawing basic inferences
  • Identifying the purpose of a passage

The math section contains 28 questions to be answered in 45 minutes. The test measures the

candidate's ability to apply mathematical principles in the following areas:

  • Conversions
  • Operations
  • Ratios
  • Word problems

The writing section contains 21 questions to be answered in 45 minutes. Candidates read nine

passages and answer questions that measure the essential skills required for writing:

  • Assessing passage development
  • Assessing paragraph logic
  • Assessing mechanics of writing

The science section contains 20 questions to be answered in 30 minutes. The test measures the

candidate's knowledge of physiology in the following areas:

  • Cardiovascular system
  • Electrolytes
  • Gastrointestinal system
  • Immune system
  • Renal system
  • Homeostasis
  • Respiratory system
  • Sensory system
  • Neurology

WOW.. that's great information! Thank you so much. XD I have been studying hard out of my A&P cliff notes. I'm trying to just focus on the physiology part since I hear anatomy is not going to be a focus. I'm also refreshing with basic math and algebra.! Excited to finish the application and exam already..

Hi my name is Jane and I'm also a Spring 2012 hopeful! I'm getting really nervous as the application deadline is getting closer, and about the entrance exam. It seems like there are a lot of good candidates out there. Has anyone taken the Kaplan yet? Or is anyone scheduled to take it? I was looking through other threads, and most people that I read who took the exam received a grade in the 70's, some in the 80's, and one or two people barely received a 90 on the exam. From what I've read the science portion is pretty difficult =\.

I found a pdf file online that has a breakdown of the exam, but it also has a few sample questions that gives you an idea of the what the questions are like. I'm trying to figure out how to attach the file to the post. Does anyone know how to do this?

I did take the exam already! So I took the HESI as well because I am applying to my community college as a back-up plan (NAU Yuma only accepts 10 students per semester), and my opinion is that the Kaplan is a bit more difficult than the HESI (so I wish they still used the HESI)!!! I scored a 91% overall on the HESI and an 85% on the Kaplan. The bad thing about the Kaplan is that each section has very few questions so if you miss 2 or 3 then it brings down your grade quite a bit.

In the reading portion, pay close attention and take your time. It is multiple choice but there will be several answers that seem correct, and you will just have to choose the BEST answer. For example, it will give you the reading and ask you to choose between several outlines that best summarizes the points made.

The math portion was pretty easy. The Kaplan study book put too much extra information that isn't on the exam. There's some word problems, but no geometry. It is mainly addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions/decimals, proportions, ratios, etc.

The writing portion to me wasn't easy. I would just say take your time on this sections as well. It will give you several sentences and ask you to pick the sentence that has a word that could be taken out. Or pick a sentence that is unnecessary. It will give you words placed in certain sentences and ask you which one is used incorrectly (this was difficult b/c on some you can't even tell if it is wrong or not). It will also give you a sentence or so and ask you where in the reading it would fit best (it is all multiple choice).

Now for the A&P portion! This was the MOST difficult. I would say study the most for this section. Some questions were simple like what portion of the brain controls voluntary thought and movement. Know the pathway of the circulatory/pulmonary system. Some questions won't be cut and dry like that though. I remember there being a question regarding asthma and the lungs. Know the difference between positive and negative feedback loop (homeostasis). There was also a question that asked what would happen to respiration rate and heart rate if the parasympathetic nervous system was stimulated (I remember there being 2 answers that were very close).

I already turned in my application, and I believe my recommendation letters were sent as well. I can't believe we have to wait until November to find out, but I'm just trying to focus on my classes right now and not think about it too much. Good luck on your exam tomorrow!

Good luck to all of you! I was going to be applying next semester for the NAU tucson campus program, but I saw that the majority of the classes are online. I am now on the fence about the program. Any thoughts on the online segment or does anyone know someone who has completed NAU's program?
