I think if this does get off the ground it will be a first!!!

The Federal Health Minister says the Government is likely to support a national immunisation program for young women if a vaccine for a virus that can cause cervical cancer is approved.

Earlier this year an Australian company lodged an application for the human papilloma virus (HPV)vaccine to be assessed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

The Health Minister, Tony Abbott, has told ABC's Lateline program the vaccine will also have to be considered by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Board which assesses cost effectiveness.

"If this human papilloma virus vaccine comes through those two processes, it's very very likely indeed that the Government would support it under the national immunisation program," he said.

This vaccine has a near 100% success rate in conferring immunity to the pappilloma virus causing 70% of Cervical cancer.

Yet many of the religious right in USA think that it will encourage promiscuity by removing some of the risks of disease from sexual activity. Some have stated publically that they will not give the vaccine for their kids..."because they will be abstainent and don't need it".

Un-bel-ievable!!! Fortunately we do not have that particular brand of idiocy over here. (We DO have other brands though lol) I bet too that when thier daughter is dying from cervical cancer they will be the first to make noises about how they were not warned of the risks:madface:

Talking about that - did you ever see the program about the cervical cancer researcher in New Zealand who refused to believe that a positive pap smear was indicative of Cancer and did not intervene or refer the women on? It was a huge scandal when it was finally uncovered - too late for many women though.
