I am seeking help to improve my nat score with FCCJ. It is an average score. The non verbal part is my lowest score and I can't figure out why. When I am taking the test, I feel as though I have gotten them all correct, but my score tells me otherwise. My GPA is a high B, but with so many applicants I need to improve my nat score with a chance of getting in the nursing program soon. . I have not been able to find any books that could help me or links on the internet. In a post that was from 2003 it had a website attached, but that website is not available any more. Reapplying in a week or so.

I haven't taken the NAT yet, but will schedule ASAP. I went to Books-A-Million @ the OP Mall and bought the general Nursing School Examination study book. I chose one that had lots of practice tests.
For me, all the tests were easy except the science.....since I took the practice tests before I took my pre-reqs and I hadn't seen a biology book since JHS or Chem in the past 20 yrs! :chuckle I just finished my last final (A&PII) and will check out my 'progress' before I take the test.
I haven't seen any study book specifically for the NAT. Wish I could give more help.
Sooooo, on that note....how was the science portion?
The science was not bad, the entire test was not bad. Its a time test so that puts a little pressure on you. The non verbal part seems extremely easy to me, then I get my scores. It doesn't make any sense to me. Reading comprehension, math, general knowledge of science.

hi msgator. Can you advise us on the math portion...without a calculator - is the longhand division a problem-in terms of quantity and the time given?
thanks.
The math section is not hard. It has some word problems and basic algebra. You are not allowed to use your calculator and I do not know if you are able to use the computer calculator. I did not use it and could not tell you if anyone else did either. It is a timed test, but just take your time and try to answer the questions correctly and not just finish the test. I think it more on accuratecy. I am not a brainy person so I did average on the test. I know of people who aced the test. Don't stress yourself out about it,, it will only make it worse. I am reapplying today for the nursing program, so anyone who would like to say a pray for me, I'll be grateful to you.
OK....took the NAT today. Like you my worst score was the non-verbal and I was just as surprised as you....they looked fairly simple. I would love to know my answer vs. their answer.
With that being said....when applying to FCCJ nursing school, the non-verbal part doesn't matter. The only sections of the test they use are: (1) Academic Aptitude, (2) Reading Comprehension and (3) Natural Science. You add your 3 raw scores together and then multiply by 0.64. That is the score they will use. (xxx/120). Then your pre-req classes...grade x # credits for each, add together....max is also 120.
According to the nursing school advisor, the lowest score accepted each of the most recent classes had 185/186 ish. If your points are well above that level, you are probably good to hook. Mine total 219 .
Oh, forgot to tell you.....
The school recommends the "ARCO - Nursing School and Allied Health Entrance Exam" as the book to use.
Good luck!
That is a great score and should have no problems getting in. I on the other hand have a combined score of 184. So I am sweating it a little bit. I thought I did pretty good in my classes, but maybe not good enough. My GPA 3.4. I thought the same as you about the non verbal score until I read a little further and I do believe is a combination of the test then divided to give you one of your raw scores. Do you have a medical background? Good Luck! I have reapplied but, not holding my breath. I can't retake the NAT until Feb., so I went ahead and reapplied. If its meant to be it will happen. I am taking a class in Jan. to go toward my four year, so I have no idle time. Thanks for the response. Again good luck.
Look at the green sheet you got when you went to the information session. Where they count up the points in an example format, you can see that they ONLY use the ones I mentioned.
Anyway....wow....184 is razor thin...it will all depend on the other applicants. If you don't get in for summer, then you can retake the NAT and shoot for Fall. Since you can't change your pre-req grades, the NAT is your best option for improving your chances. I would get the ARCO book that the school recommends and focus on the 3 sections that matter most.
Let me know how it goes! I wish you luck!!!!
No, I do not have a medical background. I am a mainframe programmer with an EE degree.
Thanks for the info. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. If I get in look me up Melissa Jones.
I will! Look for me too.....Dianne Rinehardt:D
