when someone has a N/G tube for decompression post-op (not for GI surgery) and it is attached to low suction, then when starting po clear fluids, what length of time is the suction stopped, in order to assess tolerance?
What kind of schedule for po fluids and suction on/off is used?
thanks

We usually start with 2 hrs open and 2 hrs closed if patient tolerates it. If they start clears and become nauseated then the tube should be opened per patient symptoms. If that is the case though, and the patient isnt tolerating clears and has to be opened to suction again because of nausea they probly arent ready for it anyway and should remain open another day or so. Usually the doctor will write orders regarding how he wants it.
