I really want a carreer that will allow me time more time with my family on the weekends .... (i.e. working 3 12 hour shifts sounds great).... and I've found that helping others who are in need of compassionate care is so rewarding, especiallythe elderly (the only one's I've worked with so far). If people go into this for the money ... that is just silly, there is so muchmore to it than that!

Even if you work 3 12 hr shifts, you will probably have to work every other weekend.

yes, evey hospital in my area requires every other weekend at the minimum, that way everyone has some weekend/family time.
Fair enough

There's no guarantee you'll have weekends off and usually that's where most of the people get called for overtime because no one wants to work weekends so they require at least two weekends a month.

ITA. :)
Some weekends are fine - some OT is fine too. The bottom line is that it is possible to have a schedule that will allow OP to be available for her kids when they need her and that's important for a working mom.
Well put
