I read the thread I want to become a Wal-Mart greeter and had to smile.
My friends and I always say we want to work at a clothing store and get the discount and not have the stress.
Well, I was just diagnosed with breast cancer and have realized that while it may be less stressful being a wal mart greeter you will never impact the lives of women and families as you do being a nurse.
I have been helped through this whole ordeal by two wonderful nurses in the Women's center where I was diagnosed. They have taught me, helped me emotionally, spiritually and picked up the pieces where the doctors have left them scattered about.
It has reaffirmed to me why I chose to be a NURSE. These women have truly made a difference in my life and I will remember them forever.
So when you have a hard shift, a difficult family to deal with, a tragic outcome, just know that you being the best nurse you can be is making a difference.
The nurse who took care of me after my surgery was back to work for the first time since having her baby. I took care of her and stayed late to finish her c-section. She shared with me that she will never forget me and she returned the favor and was an awesome nurse to me.
Nurses are amazing life changing people.
Yeah to us!!!

its amazing that we can be so impacted personally be the efforts of our own profession. it goes to show that just because we dont have a lot of time to consider the effects of our work doesnt mean the pts are not noticing what it is we really do for them.
good luck on your battle. its clear by your post that you have plenty of strength and compassion and humor, which are some important currencies going through what you are. our thoughts are with you.

It's just unfortunate that more people don't realize that sooner! It seems like Docs get all the praise and recognition yet Nurses really do most of the work. Everything happens for a reason and while I'm sure you wish that this horrible disease had not stricken your life, maybe some good has come out of it. You have been a blessing to people and have surely made a difference in their lives but now you truly understand the importance of that! Stay strong, stay healthy and stay true to who you are! I wish you all the best.:redpinkhe

The above is EXACTLY why I am going to nursing school. I have been a store clerk and various low-level jobs in customer service all my life. I am helping people but not in a way that really matters, ya know? It's great if someone gets their carpet delivered on time but helping to save and change lives, now THAT'S how I want to help people!
Thanks for your post! May you kick your cancer in the @ss!
