My Job is Physically Dangerous

Dear Nurse Beth,

Been a bedside RN for 12 years with an associate degree. I find mymedsurg job is resulting in frequent back injury and the psych nurse job I have has become increasingly dangerous d/t a new law saying we have to take all patients in the ed no matter how violent, many coworkers have been seriously assaulted. I am seeking advice for a less dangerous and physically involved job.

Dear Seeking Advice,

Clinical bedside nursing takes a toll on the body, and it's good to have a plan to move away from the bedside when the time comes.

Getting your BSN will qualify you for a lot more opportunities, such as case management, and even work from home jobs. I would start on my BSN as soon as possible.

In the meantime, are there any opportunities for a charge nurse position in either of your jobs? It would give you leadership experience as well as be less physically demanding.

Take precautions with your back and practice good body mechanics. The guidelines are to lift no more than 35 lbs without assistance. This isn't always possible, but it's just as important to keep yourself healthy and maintain core strength to protect your back.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
