My Gpa Is Low What Are My Options

Published

My GPA is really low from past university I am now at a community college and I have 3 more classes to take after this semseter (in the summer). Not only do I feel like I wont be able to get into a descent nursing school but I am not sure if I am ready. I want start off some where else like get my CNA license or get my RN licesne and go back and get me RN degree. Does anyone have any advice or other suggestions on schools in the Houston area or near by or better options?

I am located on Northwest side of Houston, but I am willing to locate anywhere wihtin a hour away considering my options if I have to go farher I will money is not an issue

I just checked the requirements to get into the ASN program at North Harris College. It looks like you just need a 2.5 in the prereqs that they require.

I wouldn't give up trying to get into an ASN program just yet. You haven't even applied yet. You still have options. Can you retake some of the classes to boost your gpa?

If I were you, I would retake Anatomy 1&2 and Microbiology and study hard hoping to get As. If your GPA is 2.0 or below, I would automatically take more classes over. You are competing againt hundreds of people who have high GPAs already, so if you are average, you dont have much chance. You have to do your best to be above average. If you are an average student, it will be difficult to get accepted to a program. I wish you luck. With some prayers, you probably will.

I am in the same boat. I transferred from a community college to a university this past January. At the community college I was mostly a C average student. The nursing school that I am attending has very strict requirements for getting accepted into the nursing program. So I have decided to change my major to community health education. This will help build up my GPA. After I graduate I plan to do the accelerated nursing program. I think by the time that I finish my BSN in community health education, My study skills will have improved and I can be more focused on the nursing program. Don't feel bad and beat up on yourself if nursing school is not for you at this time. If you really want to be a nurse the time will come for you to get accepted into a good program. Good Luck!!

I live in Houston too. At San Jac last year they only took 4.0's. Alvin has a good program and there is an option to take the ACT to apply. If you do very well on that you have a good chance there. I'm going to be brutally honest and tell you that a poor score in micro and especially nutrition is not acceptable. I'm concerned why you didn't do so well. Could you possibly benefit from a study skills class? Are you able to be apart of a study group? I find that many times others pick up things I missed in lecture and vice-versa. I have friends in various nursing programs and they have all assured me that its alot harder than the pre-req's. You'll need a strong science GPA around this town babe.

If your going to take another route, I would consider getting your LVN over CNA. I know San Jac uses a point system,(the more college credits, the more points) and the LVN program will better prepare you to be a RN. I might have to do that and my GPA is not that bad. If you're determined you'll make it! Best of luck! :wink2:

My first college attempt was a nightmare!!! I will not even mention what my GPA was when I left school... lets just say it was pretty dang low. Once I stepped back and got my act together and focused on what I wanted I was ok (have had 2 4.0 semesters)...

Look at what your school requires for admission. The school that I am applying to goes off a points system and the only time your GPA comes into play is if you are tied in points with someone else for a seat. You have to have a min of a 2.5 to apply to the program but your GPA is passed only on the classes that are in the nursing program (technically the only pre-reqs to our program are chem, bio, and eng, the others are considered co-reqs) Even with my lower than dirt GPA last year I could still apply to the program because thankfully the 3 classes I had taken were 3 that I actually showed up for the first time around and it gave me a 3.0 GPA. When I apply later this month going off of what my "nursing" GPA would be then I am applying with a 3.8... my overall GPA is still a 2.4 something even after all the classes these past two semesters. It is much easier to screw up a GPA than it is to repair it. What I would focus on is why you did poorly in the classes to begin with. Was it because you were not studying and working or was it because you were struggling with the material? Your nursing classes will base a lot on you having already had the other classes and having an understanding for the material taught. You might get a quick review with the introduction to the material but it will not make up for not learning it in the first place.

Good luck!!

Alnee
