My crazy dilemma!

Published

hi everyone!

i'm a new grad, have yet to take my boards and i have no job lined up. this is a long story, but i do want to get it all out lol. forgive me for any typos, i'm kind of in a rush!! lol

i was in contact with hr at one big hospital in boston and things were going ok. then she stopped returning my phone calls and didn't email me back. i called once more only to find out she didn't work at the hospital anymore, so i talked with the new recruiter and, of course, there are no new grad positions left. i was so crushed bc it's the one place i really wanted to work. so i started checking up on other resumes i had put out at other large hospitals and other jobs i had applied for and nothing. either all full or no one has returned my calls. i'm feeling very upset, distressed, pissed, and scared about this because i do not want to work at a small local hospital. they do not have new grad programs and aren't teaching hospitals and i do not like the local hospitals.

i work at a nursing home right now and i do not want to work there either, none of the nurses want me to come back either because i am the only one there with my bsn and they want me to get experience at a large hospital, which i agree with.

i have always wanted to move out of state but was worried about doing so, and so i filled out my nclex application for a massachusetts license. i decided to give it a try and called a hospital in nyc and to my surprise, the man called back in 15 mins!!!! i'm used to waiting a day or two before i call them back and leave another message.

i don't have a job interview lined up right now, but i am going to the hospital to meet with him, get a tour and ask questions. he did ask whether or not i would get my license in ny or ma and i told him ma and then i would get reciprocity. he said that could take up to 3 or 4 months and if i were serious about moving, i should try and change it so my license would be in ny.

i am very serious about moving, i've always wanted to live in nyc, but chickened out when filling out my nclex application (stupid me!). i called and found out that because i already got my att, i cannot change it to ny. another hurtful blow. so that's my story and here are my questions

i've looked online and i can't find any information about how to go about getting reciprocity in another state and no one was in any of the offices at the mass board of nursing (i feel like everyone in ma is on vacation right now). does anyone know how to go about getting reciprocity in ny and how long it will take (i know he said 3-4 months, but i was wondering if anyone else had a different experience).

i'm going to talk to people in hr when i go, but i think they accept new grads all the time, bc he said they had an oricentation once per month (does anyone work at mount sinai hospital????)

but does anyone have any clue what i shoudl do in the meantime?? i don't want to have my ma license for 3 months while i wait for reciprocity and then not get a job in ny. i also don't want to start working someplace only to leave after 3 months. i was thinking of working at my nursing home until then, but the staff isn't too keen on new grad nurses.

i'm just worried i won't get a job in ny, then get screwed in ma bc no new grad positions are open. i really want to move to nyc though. i'm calling other hospitals in as well and i think i'm going to call hr tomorrow at mt. sinai and expina my dilemma. maybe i can work as an aide until my reciprocity is completed? i'm so stressed right now and i still have the boards to study for!

sorry for the long story, but if anyone can help i'd greatly appreciate it.

I am from NYC! A lot of employers, especially in hospitals will cooperate with your situation. Its all about your approach. Do not be frantic, but show concern and ambition! Mount Sanai is a GREAT hospital and there are MANY other hospitals in NYC (all boroughs). Travel will be easier for you in NY also. Don't put your eggs in one basket. Look at other places also. One person in a hospital may tell you one thing and another person in the same place will tell you another. Call and speak to at least 3 people that are in a position to help you. Im sure that it will work out. You will be able to get a job and reciprocity. Good Luck to you!
