Must know questions before accepting a HH RN Job

Hi Everyone,

I'm in the process of applying for a HH job and I was wondering what are a list of "must know" questions before accepting a position. I have never worked HH, but I have worked med-surg for several years. Thanks for your help!

First get in your own mind what kind of job that you are looking for and would be willing to accept. As an RN you have a few options. Do you want to do intermittent visits or extended care, (also known as continuous care or shift work)? Do you want to be an RN clinical supervisor or do you want to work as field staff, doing either intermittent visits or extended care? You might want to do field work for at least awhile before you tackle a supervisory type job, at least in the beginning. Shift work is inherently more easy and less stress than intermittent visits. Unless you have a burning desire to start with intermittent visits, I would suggest starting with extended care, then moving into intermittent visits down the line if you desire. Some agencies offer both extended care and intermittent visit work, while other agencies offer one or the other, but not both. This would be your first question to ask. You can find other questions to ask by reading a few threads and individual posts. On call or no on call, travel pay between intermittent visits, beeper pay, do they provide cell phones, cars, or laptops for your use in the field. Rates of pay and benefits, of course.

How is call handled, how am I paid, how much time am I supposed to spend on paperwork uncompensated

What is the orientation period and how is it conducted? By whom?

If Medicare home health (intermittent visits), who conducts the OASIS training? How many visits are considered full-time productivity?

Is the pay per-visit, hourly, or salary?

What are the dress requirements?

What supplies will be provided by the agency and what will you have to provide on your own?

Paper charting or computer?

Look through this forum and see what other questions you can come up with based on the problems others have posted about and what would be an issue for you.
