I have listened to music on the way to and from work which does help to de-stress and keep my thoughts away from working. I listen to a lot of groups that have been around a long time like Mellencamp, Bon Jovi, and sometimes Christian music. My best advice is try not to take your worries home with you...your off time should be focused just on you.
I find Deva Premal very relaxing, even if I don't know what she's saying.
Old thread but great topic. Here's what's in my iTunes RELAX playlist:
#1. Saint-Saens' Symphony #3 "The Organ Symphony" by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra -- NEVER FAILS to bring me down and yet leaves me happy and hopeful.
#2 Pink Floyd (The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, etc.)
#3 Portishead (Dummy -- entire CD but particularly "Roads" "It's A Fire")
#4 Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah"
#5 T-Rex "Cosmic Dancer"
#6 Beck "Lost Cause"
#7 Alexei Murdoch "All My Days"
#8 David Bowie "Ashes to Ashes"
#9 Secret Garden "Sleepsong"
#10 Jane Siberry/kd Lang "Calling All Angels"
#11 Stranglers "Golden Brown"

I don't know about others on this thread, but music is what gets me through those tough days at work. I have not seen any other threads in regards to this so I figured I would make one. I'm just curious to see if other nurses out there listen to music to relief stress, and what types of music? I think there are some generational differences on this site and I am very interested to hear what some older nurses listen to as well.
Personally, I listen to primarily electronica, punk, some rap, and really most music that sounds good to me. :) I am a new grad so I am now getting used to the steady paycheck. The first few months of work I had no idea how to budget and ended up spending all my money. My plan now is to see at least one live band a month, and that will be the one day where I let loose. This way I have something to look forward to each month and I'm not going out each weekend. I just saw Thrice, Alkaline trio, and Rise Against. :)
The song that got me through nursing school (useless by kruder and dorfmeister) check it out!
