Musculoskeletal Help PLEASE AND THANK YOU

Published

OK. So I'm obviously a lucky nursing student... and I'm currently pretty screwed on an assignment.

I've never done Ortho or Neuro... only Oncology.

I have to do a hx/px for a pt w/a musculoskeletal injury, and I would really appreciate some feedback as far as what questions I would ask my fictional pt, I'm stumped like crazy, having NO experience from which to draw.

What do you guys think is important to ask during a hx (aside from the obvious: how did it happen) for a broken bone? Everything? Anything in particular? Oh man.

Thanks in advance for your time and advice :)

Conditions that affect bone strength/density (self or family), dietary habits (calcium intake, etc), physical activity risk potential (recreational and @ work), previous fractures/breaks/trauma, risky behaviours (ie, sports, etc), joint/bone/mm pain, deformities, numbness/tingling, mm weakness, ROM, ADLs, etc, etc....

Specializes in IMCU.

In my Med/Surg book, under the MS sections, they have a ton of questions for this. I'd dig up your med surg book or use one from the school library.

Also, think about what information you would need for any injury. You already said "how did it happen" but what if the patient said they just fell? Did they hurt anything else? How about the head? LOC? What if they just "slipped" if the broken bone isn't in the leg/foot what is their gait like? Have they had any issues maintaining their balance? Recent changes in health? Do they feel safe at home (i.e. dom violence inquiry).

I know it is a lot. Just spitballing here.
