MUSC Spring 2019 ABSN

Just putting feelers out there to see if anyone else on here is applying...

I live about 20-25 minutes away but am not looking for roommates at this time. I will definitely let you know if any of my friends are though!!

I live about 60 miles away. Looking for cheap helicopter and pilot to go with... Landing pad would also be nice! The drive is just gonna suck - but moving isn't an option for me.

How have those who have been accepted approached the essay? The limit of 100 words makes it difficult to decide on what to write.

I wrote the truth. I didn't pretend to be something that I'm not, nor did I attempt to BS anyone with some hokey diversity statement. It took me at least 2 full months of having things run though my head before I felt that my response was really reflective of me and just me. It surely didn't come out on the first draft!

I'm currently in the MUSC absn program if you have any questions!

I have many questions lol! I am currently in my second semester of a nursing program and am applying to MUSC cause I am not happy with the program that I am in. I know the minimum GPA they accept is 3.0 but do you know anyone that got in with that GPA or around that GPA? Also what do you think of the program, what is it like?

I do not really know anyone elses GPA. I do know one student that had above a 3.5 and tried for 7 years until she finally got in. I got in the first try. It really is done on an individual basis. Rumor has it that spring is easier to get into than fall. Rumors are just that - rumors. It is really best to just ignore them because they grow lives of their own.

I have often said I wish that I could see how they came to a decision on our cohort because we are all so wildly different. The program is no joke. One of our professors the other day specifically stated "you knew what you were getting into when you applied for this program". It is true - we knew. It is a demanding program, done quickly, at a teaching hospital with very little pity. They were a little generous with pity the first semester, but... we know whats going on now and its up to us to make use of our time wisely. I like the program and our instructors. I only work 1 day a week and I sleep about 5 hours a night.

Are you local or at least SC? Whats up with your program now - are you passing?

Yes I live in Myrtle Beach! I go to Horry Georgetown Technical College and i’m in the ADN program. Right now I am passing but this program has been awful. During our orientation our instructors made it seem like they cared so much about our success, and I soon found out that was a lie. After my first test I went to see an instructor and told her i can’t eat or sleep at night because of the anxiety of failing and she told me “I don’t know what to tell you, you should see a counselor”. Every time I reach out to an instructor I get the same answer every time about how I need to see a tutor and do practice questions and a whole bunch of other stuff, they never offer to get with me one on one. I see a tutor weekly and she doesn’t even know what to help me with because my instructors don’t provide her with any material. Speaking of rumors, i’ve heard that my instructors soon have to go up against the board cause there is a possibility the school might lose their accreditation, but that’s just what I heard I don’t know if it’s true. Ive heard nothing but good about MUSC and i’m ready to be in a program where I feel supported and have instructors that care.

Did you miss the cutoff yet? For some reason I think it opens in July. If you haven't - apply. Its $100. Whats the worst that can happen? I bet you've blown $100 at Walmart before!

You can pass in your program even without their help - you may need a little outside guidance for how to study, but its certainly possible. The accreditation thing is a different story.

When did you start your program and do you use ATI?

I started in Spring of 2019 so last semester, and i’ve never heard of ATI! I am applying for the ABSN program for Spring 2020 and in almost finished with it, and it’s due on August 15!

So for now... NRSNG.com is great. They are worth every penny if you don't have ATI - just buy a year at a time and actually use it.

ATI is a company that I guess does predictor tests?? We have to study them like everything else. They have videos we watch, tests we take - questions out the wazoo. Its like $600 or $800 and included with our tuition. We have to get certain scores on tests to move forward.

I assume you will be moving into Med Surg. After you get NRSNG, start learning the Med Surg content. Start at the top and work down (like head, lungs, heart, upper gi, lower gi, etc). Don't memorize anything - memorizing doesn't work for med-surg. You need to understand how things work. That could be what is wrong this semester too. Everyone says do questions but no one tells you to actually learn how things work not just memorize the book in front of you.

NRSNG has a question set - I haven't used theirs yet because I've been stuck studying for my ATI stuff. But - buy your books. Most publishers now have nclex style questions included with the book (ebook or paper will give you a code to their online stuff). Yes they are expensive - but totally worth it for all those questions.

You could almost be done with school by Spring 2020 right?

The semester I am in right now is med-surg, and I have a week left of this semester. If I stayed where i’m at I would graduate next summer so summer 2020. If I get accepted next summer I will be in my second semester when I would be graduating from my program now. I don’t think going to MUSC would put me behind cause right now i’m in an associates program, so I plan to get my bachelors anyways. If I go to MUSC I would finish in the same time I would be finishing my program now + going to get my bachelors or maybe even a semester ahead.

Gotcha - you would essentially be starting over but starting over with a BSN.

You can't do much for this semester except make it through and then go back and re-learn. Having a firm foundation for med-surg is really important. Take time in between semesters and build that foundation. It will help you no matter what.

Can you include an attachment with your application? I may call and ask or include a letter stating why you want to leave your school and enroll at MUSC. The other option is to make it through your program and then do the RN-BSN option at MUSC also. But.... there's that pesky accreditation thing. I'd write the letter or ask and use that as my reason for wanting to get out of there. It doesn't matter if you stick it out or not if they lose their accreditation.

Side note - I'm willing to be there is a free trial for NRSNG and if not - email them and ask for one :). Tell them someone who has a membership sent you to try it out!!
