Just wanted to start a thread for those who are applying to the cohort starting in 2020 for the Medical University of South Carolina CRNA program...reaching out to anyone who plans to apply.

If anyone has any update regarding the status for persons given alternate to acceptance and feels comfortable sharing, it would be greatly appreciated.

I literally just emailed Dr. Mund asking what all that meant and if she could tell me how many people were on the alternate list. My mom was an alternate before she got in (granted, 26 years ago) and they could call her up to 2 weeks after the semester started.

I heard back, basically the alternate list isn't very long, and it's pretty much indefinite on when they can call you, up to a couple weeks after the semester starts. She said they've only offered spots after the start of semester twice, but it has happened. As far as how often they have people drop and alternates are offered spots, she didn't say. I'm not sure what they count as not a long list, but at least that's a little encouraging?

Word of warning to potential applicants: apply early. Their admissions office is slow to get paperwork over to the program. I applied either on the deadline or the day before. I didn’t get any notice from the program. I called after all the invitations were emailed and the program director actually answered the phone. He was cool, but just said that he had just received my application that day from the admissions office and they had already sent out all the invites. All is well, I’m starting at a different program in January. Just don’t wait until the last minute. Good luck everyone!

Does anyone know how often you have clinicals outside the Charleston area?

Sounds like fairly often, and it’s actually what you want. I asked during my interview and they said that at MUSC you compete with anesthesia residents for cases, but their other sites it’s much more just CRNAs and students. They have 23 sites through SC and two in Georgia.

side note: I got accepted off the alternate list! Ready to meet everyone ?

Did it sound to you like you're away from Charleston then for months at a time? And congratulations!!!

Sounded like it was very possible, although depending on clinical schedule I think people still go back to wherever they live weekly too. Sounded like it depended a lot on your rotation? They didn’t give me a ton of details on that part of it. And thank you!! I’m thrilled ?

I'm excited as our start date approaches! Hoping our on campus orientation can proceed as planned, despite everything happening with the coronavirus.

Me too! Fingers crossed...I do like how they have been handling it from all the emails we have gotten.
