Mumps epidemic

Published

Since they are now anticipating a Mumps epidemic :angryfire in Arizona having discovered that the origin of the disease was a student flying out of Tucson, will the hospitals require nurses to get a mumps vacination? My son is starting work there soon and is trying to decide if he should just go ahead and get the vacination here. Lets hope this does not happen.

Can he just have a titer drawn to see if re-vaccination is necessary?

They will do a titre first, to see what his immunization is against the virus.

Depending on that, then they will give or not give the vaccine.

Most hospitals now require that a nurse show proof of titre or vaccination before starting work. They normally will not vaccinate if his titre is okay.

Your son should have had the MMR - measles, mumps, rubella - vaccine years ago.

That is why a titre will be done before giving the vaccine again.

He's too old to have had the vaccinations as a child. But, it looks like he's covered in any case when he gets his physical. He may have had it when he was admitted to the university but he isn't sure. thanks for the replies.

I had the series as a child back in the late 70s and occ health said I could either have a second (AZ requires 2) or get a titre. I decided the former as if exposed I'd rather have strengthened immunity.
