Multiple Applications, References

Is anyone else applying to more than a couple schools? If so, how do you approach those you are needing a reference from?

I'm thinking of applying to 4 schools and am not sure if I should say that up-front or just as each application is due. My problem is that I've only been at my job for about a year and am not totally confident of asking my supervisor to do it, especially for multiple schools.

I feel like if you're unsure if you can even ask your supervisor to write a reccomendation.... you probably shouldn't ask them... reccomendations hold a lot of weight... maybe ask someone else or if you feel like they'd write good reccomendations for you just tell them upfront that you're applying to multiple schools and ask if they can write reccomendations for each.

I applied to multiple schools (3 so far) and had no problems asking those I needed for multiple recommendations. The MD who wrote several recs for me was more than willing to write as many as I needed. If someone is hesitating to write you more than one, I would seek out a different reference. Good luck.

I'm not so sure about my supervisor. It's not that I haven't been a good worker, it's just that I've been here only a year.

I don't know about your employer, but a lot of the supervisors at my job aren't too happy about losing nurses after a year or so to go back to school.

My physician reference is absolutely my easiest. Most of them want to support nurses going back to school and are more than willing to write several references.

just remember that you must have good nursing references as they are the ones who work directly beside you- a doctor usually only has limited interaction...

The LORs get uploaded to nursingcas, and you attach them to whatever application you are sending to the school.. so basically you just have them write one and send it to how many ever schools u apply to.

Depends on the school. I have yet to apply to a program that uses NursingCAS.

I needed several recommendations this year. I asked them in person first to gauge their reaction. You have to know if they are genuinely supportive of your goals, and I don't think that is easily conveyed through email. Of course they were, but you have to make sure! This is your future on the line. Then I gave them a two month deadline to complete them, which was actually one month before the school deadline. People (especially nurses) are super busy and things get delayed. Plan early for lost mail and/or computer glitches. Good luck!
