How much lidocaine do you mix in with Rocephin IM to ease the pain?

Depends on what the provider orders, but for ceftriaxone 250 mg vial – mix with 0.9 mL of lidocaine 1% = 250 mg/mL.

We always do 0.9 mL (so it’s just replacing sterile water; same amount)

Ha-ha “What the provider orders...”. (I’m being light-hearted, I don’t want it to sound harsh.). I work outpatient (FQHC) and I promise the doctors have no idea how to reconstitute it! Their responsibility ends at diagnosing gonorrhea and prescribing 250mg of ceftriaxone. Google and/or the pharmacist give instructions from there.

^ You really should have a policy approved by your medical director to back that up....at the very least.

I always reconstituted it according to the package insert. The instructions were to use either SWFI or lidocaine; not both/a mixture. So whatever volume the manufacturer said to use to get the designated concentration.
