MSN Specialty

Published

Looking for advice. I will graduate in December with my BSN from the Sinclair School of Nursing, University of Missouri, Columbia. I have absolutely loved the NICU. I enjoy working with children and would not be opposed to women's health, but am thinking I would rather not work in a geriatric setting.

I would like to get my NP but am having trouble deciding a specialty because I honestly have not disliked any setting I have worked on. Currently considering FNP, PNP, or NNP. Any recommendations or helpful ways to decide? I have completed shadowing and clinical hours.

Thank you!

One helpful way to decide (not snark- I promise) is to practice as a nurse for a year or two. Then you have something to base your path on.

You are getting WAY ahead of yourself here. Graduate. Pass NCLEX. Who knows- you may love your first job so much that grad school becomes less attractive.

Agreed! My goal all throughout nursing school was to become a midwife. I got a job in OB and loved the population but hated the uncertainty and unpredictability of childbirth. Was too anxiety provoking for me so I got a job in public health doing family home visiting and found my passion for preventative healthcare and will now be starting FNP school this fall. I would've never thought in a million years that I'd want to become an FNP! If I would've gone straight through I would've never figured out my likes and dislikes and would've ended up in a role that I dreaded.
