I'm almost ready to graduate from an ADN program, where our instructors are either BSN's or MSN's, and one instructor has a MAEd. I'm starting to explore what my options are for furthering my education after I get experience. I was looking into a program at the local university, and they have a MSN nursing education. Are any of you familiar with this, and would you recommend this? I feel like I've always been interested in teaching, and feel as though I am great in front of groups (I've had to get in front of my class several times for groups I am in). Thanks for any feedback. -Andrea

I am in a MSN Education, and I find it to be great preparation for the road that lies ahead. In my (geographic) area, there are not too many of these programs around. The one I attend is quite expensive, so aome people go to a city or state school, and don't get the MSN in Ed, but in something else, and intend to teach.
IMHO, I think that it is important to learn how to teach, which is what the bulk of my classes (after the core classes) involve. Teaching strategies, curriculum development, test construction, and issues in higher education are among the things I've taken. Often the focus is not on Nursing Ed (although they are all 'nursing' classes), but higher ed, and teaching/learning theories and styles. We do, of course, touch on issues specific to nursing. There's a lot of 'sharing' in the classes (group projects, discussions, and reflections).
If you are certain that this is the way you want to go (education, that is), I would go for it. But of course, you'll have some time to decide, while you get the BSN (I remember asking my nursing prof's the same question when I was in the last semester of my ADN as well).

Hi! Another great MSN program that specializes in nursing education is Saint Joseph's college of Maine. You can check out their website if you are interested. The program has a really good reputation. If you call them, they are very receptive and helpful. I have also, always wanted to teach nursing. But, I seem to not do very well speaking in front of large group. I am trying very hard to overcome that fear. I did my BSN at Saint Joseph's College in CT. (Not affiliated with the one in Maine) My instructors knew that I was very shy so they made me do extra presentations! I was so nervous that I can hardly even remember doing the presentations at all. My confidence has improved significantly in the 13 years that I have been into nursing. So, maybe I would be better at it now.

Hello, fellow nursing community. My desire is to become a Nurse practioner & Midwife. However, due to finances I plan go the long route. I will attend nursing 2009 at CCP, then transfer to a university. Someone suggested I work for a hospital so they could pay the way but I want to go straight through and finish due to the lond road I have ahead. Any suggestion? Desperately seeking nursing money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have an MSN in nursing education and manage the education dept of a hospital. There are several avenues, including diabetic educator, faculty and research. Also, some drug companies and other vendors hire nurses to create and manage curricula for inservices.
I have a friend whos a nurse she also told me drug companies are a great way for extra income. thanks.
