trouble finding a job in ICU in CT
Hi Dawn. I am not sure how far you are willing to travel. But the hospital of St. Raphaels does hire new graduates. Every year they hire new grads. Is new haven county an option for you? I think Yale new haven hopital might even hire new graduates. Teresa

Question for Nurse Educators
Hi Kitty! I would pursue a certificate in nursing education, There are some really great certificate programs in nursing education. I don't think that you would have a problem finding a job teaching with the MSN and the certificate. I know of many faculty members who have done this, Teresa :)

any such thing as Male RN's in home health?
Hi! We have had male nurses at our homecare agency. If, we had a patient that required something such as a urinary staight catherization or maybe a rectal wound ,a female nurse would more than likely be assigned. It has never been a problem because the male nurses could do everything else. There was always so much to do. I did have a patient's daughter request that I send back the handsome male nurse who covered for me on the weekend. She was quite interested in him. She actually became angry when he did not return . Here in Connecticut, we have quite a few males doing homecare. Teresa

MSN in Nursing Education?
Hi! Another great MSN program that specializes in nursing education is Saint Joseph's college of Maine. You can check out their website if you are interested. The program has a really good reputation. If you call them, they are very receptive and helpful. I have also, always wanted to teach nursing. But, I seem to not do very well speaking in front of large group. I am trying very hard to overcome that fear. I did my BSN at Saint Joseph's College in CT. (Not affiliated with the one in Maine) My instructors knew that I was very shy so they made me do extra presentations! I was so nervous that I can hardly even remember doing the presentations at all. My confidence has improved significantly in the 13 years that I have been into nursing. So, maybe I would be better at it now. Teresa

Excelsior Degrees for CRNA schools
Hi! I think you should post this question on the CRNA board. I'm sure you would get some reponses. There are many factors that the CRNA programs take into consideration for acceptance into their programs. Teresa

Question about thalassemia and organ donation
Hi! I am also interested in response to your question. I also have thalessemia minor. But the nursing supervisor at the red cross here in connecticut told me that I could donate blood as long as I did not have thalessemia major. I found out I had thalessemia minor when I was 16 years old during a routine physical. I am african american. I have never donated blood because I was not sure if what she said was correct. My bloodwork is always abnormal so I would not want to risk passing thalessemia to anyone else. I am really not sure about the organ donation issue. Teresa

The Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing
Hi Khadijah! I am also interested in this school. Unfortunately, I am not enrolled there so I cannot give you much info about the program. I do know that the school has a excellent reputation. I have personally had care from one of their CNM graduates. She was very caring, skilled and professional during my 2nd difficult pregnancy. Also, I have looked into other MSN distance programs. But I am also interested in Frontier's community focus as well as the focus on caring for the needy. Their tuition is also less than some of the other programs. I hope that some graduates of the program will respond to this post. Teresa :)

Nursing Doctorate-University of South Africa
Hi Bookwormom! I don't know much about the University of South Africa. But, I was just wondering if the college where you work will recognize this doctorate degree. Will this increase your options of becoming a professor at this college? I am currently enrolled in a distance MPH program through California College for Health Sciences. I am also very interested in research. Teresa :)

OASIS question
At our agency, we include all meds inhaled or taken intranasally. I referred to my oasis handbook. The handbook defininition is " identifies the patient's abilty to prepare and take all prescribed inhalant/mist medications reliably and safely and the type of assistance reqired to administer the current dosage at the appropriate time/intervals." "Excludes oral, injectable and IV medications." So, I would think that any inhaled medication which the patient is using at the present time should be included. I hope that I didn't confuse you.
