MSN/DNP (direct entry) competetiveness?

Published

Hi,

I am applying to several direct entry nurse practitioner programs. I am a bit nervous about getting in. How competitive do these tend to be?

My info:

-3.65 GPA, bachelor's in biology from a good school, private college in NY. On Dean's list 2 years.

-304.5 on GRE. Math was below average, verbal and essay above average. I am re-taking the GRE to improve my math score and submitting that as well.

-Certified emergency medical responder. I have not worked as this, just certified from a course.

-Certified in BLS (Basic life support/cpr and aed).

-Hospital volunteer experience-3 months at NYU a few years ago, and just starting now at another big, well known hospital. So for my applications due soon it won't show I've been volunteering here very long, but intend to for at least 6 months.

-I have 4 references and am submitting 3 to 4 of them to the schools, I believe they are pretty strong.

-I do not have direct NP shadowing experience but have interviewed an NP.

Do I have any chance?

Thanks!

I believe you are a very strong applicant!

You listed all the reasons why you will be a good applicant.

Nursing schools look for strong academic potential, healthcare experience, and passion for nursing.

You obviously went to a good college and have a strong GPA. You are certified as a emergency responder meaning you went above and beyond to getting a training and learn more skills. You are immersing yourself in the healthcare environment through volunteering. With strong references as well, you are a great applicant.

Make sure your passion for nursing shines through your essays and interview.

Don't stress too much- you have done lots of great work already. Good luck!
