MP says female circumcisions carried out in NSW

Concerns have been raised about the number of women from New South Wales undergoing circumcision.

At least 50 patients have been admitted to Sydney's Auburn and Canterbury Hospitals in the past year for treatment after the illegal procedure.

The practice involves cutting the sex organs for cultural reasons and is normally conducted overseas.

Barbaric procedure - we should charge anyone who undertakes this here with GBH.

The term is clitorectomy and is NOT the same as male circumcision. As much as I don't think male circumcision is necessary, the practice of removing a female's privy parts means a woman can't experience sexual pleasure, the way she would if she hadn't had the procedure done.

It's barbaric and wrong and is part of a practice that doesn't believe in rights for women or children, one I cannot agree with.

That said, I think the fact that it is being practiced in Australia is a moral dilemma at best. Medical professionals are ensuring the babies are having this procedure done in the best possible conditions, when they will have it anyway, under horrific conditions.

I wouldn't be able to assist in this, as a nurse though.
