Hi everyone

I am planning a move to Incline Village Nevada in mid-May. I am in the process of checking out opportunities in the area. I am currently an LPN but working on my RN and should be complete or almost complete by the time we get there. I am going through Excelsior College and I only have the clinical exam left, not sure when I will be scheduled at this time.

I have been looking at hospitals in Reno and Carson City. The only hospital I can find a listing for in Carson City is Carson-Tahoe. Is that the only one? I know there are several in Reno but I don't even know where to start.

I would really appreciate some direction and advice on this.

Thank you!!

Christie

Carson-Tahoe is the only one in Carson City that I know of. Also close to you would be Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

Reno has Renown Regional Medical Center, Saint Mary's, Northern Nevada Medical Center, VA Hospital and some psych facilities (West Hills, Willow Springs, NNAMHS)

Oh, there's also Incline Village Community Hospital and Tahoe Forest Hospital. Both are very small facilities.

If you're going to be a new grad RN and require an orientation to the specialty you want to work in, I'd suggest Renown. They are the largest in the area and you can get plenty of experience. That's where I worked for my first year as a RN in the ICU.

I will be a new grad RN but have been working in hospitals as an LPN for over 8 years in various fields. Peds, Med/Surg, and NICU. Fortunately, people are willing to take a chance on Army trained LPNs and put them to work as actually nurses and not just pill pushers in nursing homes. I am very thankful for that. I know that any many states the only positions available for LPNs are in nursing homes. Thank you for giving me some other options to explore in the area.

I would say that's the case in northern NV as well. The only LPN I encountered while working at Renown was the employee health nurse that did our annual PPD and flu shots...

This thread is a little old, but Renown has said they will not consider Excelsior grads until they have two years of clinical experience.

Thank you for the reply. We got here about 3 weeks ago. Someone from Renown called me and told me that last week after I applied. Funny how when I spoke to the recruiter a couple of months ago, he didn't mention that.

Renown came to my school at a recruiting fair. I thought it was a good oppurtunity. When I first applied I was told they wouldnt hire new grads for a couple months. A couple months later, I found out none of the managers will hire students from my school... oh well.

Sorry to hear that Michelle.laree.

Did they give you a reason as to why they wont hire you or other graduates from Apollo college ? That seems a little strange since clinicals for apollo college students in Reno will be held at Renown. Do you get the same biased treatment in Las vegas ? I'm sure if this is the case so many potential students at the Reno campus will be dissapointed. Renown is a major hospital here.

Renown said none of the unit managers will hire students from a school they are unfamiliar with. Maybe the situation will change once the Apollo school here starts sending clinical rotations to Renown. I understand why a manager would not want to hire from a school that could have taught me anything (Enough to pass the NCLEX :) ). I could have had a job in Vegas but I wanted to try a change in scenery. Oh well.

That sounds like a load of you know what, Michelle. I graduated from UNR, but we had new grads from all over the country, so that's a flat out lie. You can't tell me that all the unit managers are familiar with schools in WI, SD, CA, etc...those are some of the states we had new grads from.

This doesn't sound fair Michelle,

I will find out more information. My husband works at Renown and his supervisor is one of the nursing directors but he also works closely with some of the the hiring managers. I will find out more and post soon.
