Moving to Raliegh, North Carolina

Hello. I am a ICU nurse working in a level 3 trauma unit (med/surgical) in South Carolina. I will be moving to Raliegh in October and need advice about which hospitals are best to work for in the area. I already placed an application at Duke Health Raliegh for employment at their ICU and received a call back. I am also looking at Wake Med and Rex. Please let me know the pros and cons of working for any of these hospitals. Also I need to know how much to ask for in starting salary with only a year and several months ICU experience. Please help:( !!

Currently live on the coast of NC, Morehead City, Have heard of only good things about the hospitals up there in Raleigh/Durham area, very updated on technology.

Another great thing, you are only 3 hours drive from the beach!!!:flowersfo

Early Welcome to NC. I do not work at any of these hospital but have friends that do. The Wake Med RN don't complain as much about general stuff,as the Duke ( Durham ) RN does. Duke pays only slightly more but bothe these RN have 10-20 yrs in thier area. Hope this helps.

I'm only 45min from the Capital City.

NC is a great place to be!

Hi Silver,

I work at WakeMed. If you're intested in a level 3 trauma unit, Wake is the place to go in the Raleigh area, they get most of the traumas. Other major trauma units would be at Chapel Hill & Duke. I think base pay is probably similar in most of the hospitals, but I've heard that Wake has the highest shift diff's., $6 for weekday nights and 2/3 base pay for weekend nights. Then they have critical care pay incentives, etc.

The pro's - it's a huge, beautiful medical center with all the latest technology, new rehab, new heart center with a "very fancy" hotel on the top floor for the heart patients families, great benefits, yearly bonus, etc.

The con's - too few to mention, so I won't...

Hi,

I work on a surgical floor - I'm new and and all I know about SICU is that some of their new staff spend some time orientating on our floor before switching over.

My husband's been at this hospital for 20 years and most of the Nurses I work with have also been there for years. From what I've heard, people don't leave to look for better opportunities in the area because they feel like this is the best place in town to work. I've met some admin and housekeeping staff that have been there as long as 30 years, so I'm just guessing they treat the employees well or nobody would stay that long.

I also work at Wakemed and like it. I'm not in trauma or intensive care but like what I'm doing and how the higher-ups at the hospital value what each employee contributes. And Wakeshare is REAL nice.
