Moving to Manhattan... need a job!

U.S.A. New York

Published

I am a nursing student in Oregon who will be graduating in June and then moving to Manhattan. I am looking at a couple of hospitals, specifically Mt. Sinai and New York-Presbyterian. Do any of you by chance have experience with any of these facilities and if so, any words of wisdom? Or perhaps, some of you have recommendations as to other faciliites that are great to work at? There are just so many hospitals in your big city and I'm not sure where to even start.

Also, any advice on what areas are the best to look at for housing? We realize the cost of living is higher there and are prepared for that but have never actually been to NYC and are wondering about what areas are safest for a couple from the Northwest? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

don't be grateful for whatever you get at this point - there is a nursing shortage afterall! choose your first job wisely though.

Boy, have the times changed!!! Although, even when I graduated (when nurses were being layed off and replaced by UAPs), some of my classmates had these delusions of grandeur, that they would get their dream job right away. Don't know whatever happened with them (lost touch with almost all of my class). My attitude was "Beggars can't be choosy". Even after 10 years, I can't write my own ticket. Some places will only take new grads into med/surg, while others will take a new grad into surgery, PACU or L&D (but they won't take me- no, I'm not bitter :angryfire :angryfire ). BTW, A coworker's daughter will be graduateing in May, and she was told by Columbia that they are not taking new grads into peds- and she has an excellent GPA from a BSN program. And I know they did take new grads in the recent past.

I know all about the city from having lived there breifly before school so know what i'm getting into but here is my problem. I live in CT right now, a 90 min train ride to Grande Central Station. I will hopefully be graduating this coming Dec. (so i have a while to think about this) and i want to move to NYC as soon as i pass my NCLEX. Problem is that i don't have any money in the bank. Does anyone have any ideas how i could get from A to B. Are there any hospitals that do a relocation stipend or something. I may end up getting a job and commuting for a month or living with friends in the city if i have to.

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for what hospitals would be good for a new RN to apply. Any help/suggestions anyone can give me would be appriciated.

Thanks!!
