moving to Maine--any advice?

Published

Am probably moving to Maine with my family this summer.

Have worked part-time in a subacute/rehab setting in MA for

my entire career (7+ yrs).

Have never been a truly confident nurse although I love my job,

love working with the geriatric pop. and have always recieved

good reviews.

Will likely be settling in the mid-coast area.

Thinking this might also be a good time to transition to

a hospital setting. Any advice? Any Mainers reading & posting?

Thanks! Em

I am in Maine- are you talking Augusta area, or more coastal?

Right now, we are focusing on the Bath/Brunswick area, but we are still in the "looking for just the right place" stage; we'll likely rent for a while before we buy. My sister lives in Gardiner; an aunt lives in Cumberland.

We've also looked at L/A area. I'm not real familiar with Augusta save for

a month long internship at AMHI when I was a freshman in college; we lived there--it was a little spooky!

Thanks for your reply. Em

I was born and raised in Maine, but have not lived there for many, many years. Lewison/Auburn is a traditional 'mill town" and not very vibrant or economically thriving... pretty dreary, in fact. There are more "transplants" along the coast in the Bath/Brunswick area, so there is a bit more cultural diversity. But of course, that makes housing more expensive. Do you have kids? If so, research schools carefully, as the quality varies widely. I'd recommend subscribing to local papers to get a feel for communities you are considering.

Yes, we have 2 kids in grade school and a 6-month old.

I have been told Cape Elizabeth schools are among the best in the area, but real estate is pretty pricey.

I have spent a lot of time in the Brunswick/Harpswell area, and know that the Brunswick schools have a good reputation. Still researching Bath.

I am a little north of you, so haven't worked in those areas. I can give you more information if you start thinking about going more towards Bangor and north of that.
