Hey Everyone,
I am a three year RN and am wanting to get into a trauma ICU or cardiac ICU if I could. My first 6 months experience was on a 32 bed telemetry unit and then after that I've worked for a tiny 25 bed critical access hospital for the last 2+ years in the what they call an ICU. I also float to OB and have experience with laboring patients and newborn care as well. I have certifications in ACLS, PALS, STABLE, FHM, NRP and TNCC. Any thoughts on whether or not it would be difficult for me to land a job? I'm also just a few classes away from my BSN and have the CCRN study book with intentions to get this when I have enough true ICU time. Thanks!!

If you are wanting to move to Hawaii, I would suggest you wait. ICU's here want experienced ICU nurses and jobs are few and far between. If you willing to work the floor then you have a slightly better chance of scoring a position. An alternative would be to take a travel assignment if you can find one to come here and get a feel for things but with the current economy these positions may also be difficult to come by. Sorry for such grim news but that is the reality of the situation at the present time.
You can check the Hawaii forum and find numerous posts similar to yours.
Good luck!

We are moving to Hawaii with the Air Force, so there's no choice on that one. Are you presently in Hawaii? The way you make it sound is no hospitals are willing to train nurses? Unfortunate. I would be willing to work the floor to get my foot in the door at least. Thanks for the info!
Being military, I would suggest you start with Tripler. Some hospitals do have training programs but there is a glut of new grads here. Hawaii Pacific Health has programs to train nurses new grads, and experienced floor nurses who want to move to ICU or ED. This requires a minimum of two year commitment. I would expect that some hospitals may be reluctant to hire and train you do to the unpredictability of your husbands situation, the mil says up and move, you get up and move! Agency work maybe a good way for you to see how things work here and get your foot in the door somewhere.
Good luck and thank your husband for his service!
I had thought about Tripler but didn't know how civilian nurses were treated and such. I'm also a veteran so I could have a better chance of getting a job there too I guess. The good thing about this assignment is we are locked in for the next four years. I had thought about agency work as well but I'm one who likes to interview the hospital as much as they are interviewing me and I wasn't sure how much of that I would get to do. I just want to show and feel career progression, but I don't want to be over my head. I expect good training and if I don't get it I find work elsewhere you know? I don't mean for that to sound bad. I appreciate and thank you for all the information you are giving!
