Moving to Cabot

Published

We are planning to move to Cabot this summer (assuming we can sell our house in Atlanta). I am planning to finally start on my dream of becoming a nurse. I am currently a high school teacher. I am old (45) and don't have any science background. I am tenatively planning on going to Arkansas State at Beebe to take my pre-reqs, then starting nursing school in a year or so. I know I eventally want to get a doctorate. I would like some advice on the best place to get my RN in Little Rock. Especially because of my age and compressed time line I want to get the best instruction (especially clinical )that I can. I am leaning toward UAMS but it looks like they are also the only place offering Masters and Doctorate programs in the area.I am wondering if that would be a disadvantage to have all three nursing degrees from the same place. My long term goal (for when I get really old ) is to teach nursing at a college. I would appreciate any advice about the schools or even just the area. We do have one child still at home (6th grade) and we have heard the schools in Cabot are very good.

Thanks so much.

hello, cameadors and welcome to the :balloons: arkansas forum:balloons:

it is great to see another possible razorback.

i'm not familiar with the school system in cabot. they do boast a nice school system and not far from lr at all (about 25 miles?). but, i do know that uams has a wonderful nursing program. i know many who have both their undergrad and postgrad from there. i suppose it is personal preference whether you want degrees from seperate entities.

but, one thing is for certain; move here and you must renounce any allegiance to the bulldogs. razorbacks eat them for midmorning snacks, ya know!!;)

wooo....pig...sooie....razorbacks!!

Welcome, CAMeadors!

I am just a little ways from Cabot. . . . DH and I drive there to eat dinner sometimes! I have friends that have children in the Cabot school districts, and they love the schools there! I don't have experience with the schools personally, but I know many many people that have moved to Cabot because of the reputation of the schools system there.

Also, I wouldn't worry about getting all of your degrees from UAMS. UAMS also has a wonderful reputation, so if anything I would think this would help rather than hinder you! From what I understand, the shortage of nursing teachers is as bad here as it is anywhere, so regardless I don' think you'll have trouble eventually being a teacher in central Arkansas!

Hope this helps!

CAMeadors,

Some folks advocate schools for various reasons, some of which don't hold up to objective scrutiny. They same can be said of athletic programs; there's hoopla and reality.

Little Rock has three programs off the top of my head. Searcy has Harding U which has a religious affiliation if that is to your liking and is north of Cabot which means you shouldn't be fighting traffic during commutes. I'm telling some folks to contact the AR board of nursing for school's first time NCLEX pass rate. If you're spending time and money, I think it's wise to attend a school that's shown a recent trend with a high percentile first-time testing NCLEX passage rate so as to maximize the likelihood of passing. Each test is $200ish.

Just my opinion...

Hi...I live close to Cabot and my children went there and graduated from Cabot...If I had school age children...it would not be in Cabot.

klwilson-I'm interested to hear your experiences with Cabot schools. We did move here a year ago, and I haven't been real pleased with the schools so far. I tried to PM you and it wouldn't go through.

thanks,

I live in Cabot and my kids graduated from the schools here. No problems, great education. As far as nursing goes, the best clinically prepared nurses have generally come from UALR. All the nursing schools are good. UCA in Conway...~20 miles from Cabot, offers a super program and the graduates I've known have been tops. My youngest son graduated from their nuclear med program...they did wonders with him :)
