I will be moving to Birmingham, AL to attend UAB's anesthesia program this fall and need to find a place to live. I am looking to buy a house near the campus (atleast within 15-20 driving minutes or closer). If you have any knowledge of good neighborhoods in this area please let me know. Thanks in advance.
We had 2 dogs in the Pelham/Indian Springs area. The greatest thing about that area is that the state's largest state park is right there. Feeling like a hike, fishing, rowing around the lake, seeing wildlife, driving up to the top of a mountain to see a waterfall, all right there!! I found the park to be a great place for me and the dogs! It also has horseback riding, golf and a petting zoo. There is also a great park off of 119 that has walking trails and is dog friendly with a police station actually in the park! We were right next to the interstate, and you can find really inexpensive houses there. We were close to the Riverchase/Pelham line and loved it. 4 different grocery stores close by, a few great malls right there in Hoover, friendly neighbors, and cheap water and waste pickup rates. Traffic is really not that bad as long as you leave a little early. You will need to do that anyway to get good parking at UAB. Good Luck!

Definitely stay away from Avondale....drugs, crime, etc!
I lived in Crestwood and had to move after just one year because everything we owned that wasn't nailed down was stolen. The last straw was when the body of a murder victim was found just a few streets over from us. Crestwood is a nice older neighborhood. The street we lived on was fine. The problem is that the neighborhood is surrounded by low income, high crime areas. Gate City is very close to Crestwood and its an area where you wouldn't even want to drive around in the day with your doors locked and a body guard beside you. Avondale is a definite no...drugs, crime, etc. I understand wanting to be close to school, but peace of mind is important too.
