More aesthetic roadblocks

I called the board of cosmetologists and barbers to see if I could rent a space in a salon and sure enough I can't...not without a cosmetologist license. So how are you guys doing it? If I get my own building and do peels and micro, am I still suppose to answer to the cosmetology board? I've heard some of you say you own spas. Who do you answer to? I know they control salons, but if I opened my very own place, does it have to be considered a salon? I know you guys are out their doing it and I would like to know how you got around the cosmetology board. Is my only other choice to work in a doctor's office? I really want my own place. The board of nursing said their is nothing in WV law that prohibits me doing these actual procedures on my own. I really hate to throw in the towel now after all the studying, work, time and money I have put into this. But more than that, it is just crushing my dreams :-( Please help.

My post did not include my training, background, etc. I am personally offended that you would make the assumptions that you did, lacking information about me....stating that I have not spent time, money, or effort learning about aesthetics!! Of course I have. Lots of us that post here have, and that's why we post....don't be so quick to give us all a slap in the face after all the effort we put into this. I worked under a dermatologist at that time and took independent training on my own. At that time, I was wanting to branch out on my own and needing advice. That post was nearly two years ago and I've done well since then. Your "advice" as you call it is not needed.

Wow, I think you really took my comment out of contents! As i said, i was not trying to be negative, i was only saying you should research COST of this line of business before making the leap or any small investment for that matter. I was speaking to you to assist, not be negative. Please reread my comment, but this time knowing that i truely meant it as constructive help, nothing as you thought ("quick to give us all a slap in the face"???? no clue where you got that from!!)

Again, i apologize if you took my info out of context and i hope you have done as successfully as you say and more success to you in the future.

btw- my "advice" as you quoted it is usually appreciated as is the advice i recieve from nurses that know more about their skills than i do. i was just doing what this forum was meant to do --- communicate & help one another based on our knowledge. Sorry you took offense to it. Again Good Luck.

Question for this thread. I have 2 careers right now...have had a cosmetology license for 30 years, rent a station have a great clientele and make a great living doing this. About 15 years ago I decided to become a RN so I went back to school and accomplished my goal. I now do ortho nursing part time at a major medical center on weekends and do hair the rest of the week. I have always had an interest in both fields and I think this particular branch of nursing would satisfy both careers. I need to know where I could find more info on this subject. Any info out there will be appreciated. Thanks!

Youre experience seems ideal for this industry...

Go check the employement websites and find who's hiring in your area.

After doing that, go to their website and learn about what procedures they do. Once your familiar and you find one that fits what you desire...

APPLY!!!

The larger companies (national ones) all have in house training, so your experience and "sales" ability at the interview is all you need to get the job you want.

My only advice is start part time, so you can see if YOU will like it!

ALSO, by keeping your hair position, you can show (at the interview) that you have a "clientelle" following and an avenue to PROMOTE their med services...

THEY LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE THAT!!!

Do you know anything about owning your own home business doing medical aesthetics in BC, Canada? I'm a RN and my goal is to eventually start my own business with IPL treatments at home. I'm just a little confused because some people are saying you need a medical doctor to over see everything. Is this true because there are tons of laser clinics out there who are run by laser technicians. I'm having trouble finding BC laws regarding this matter.

Your a nurse, even if your doing some borderline esthetician procedures. You answer to the nursing board. If you want to have your own facility it's opened the same way a doctor's office is. You have to be HIPPA compliant, compliant with the city (meaning since your a medical office you can only be in certain offices zoned for medical use), you'll need a license to generate medical waste and you'll have to contract with a medical waste disposal company. You do not need to get licensed with the board of cosmetology as a salon unless you employ or are a cosmetologist.

So, you need to find a place that is zoned for medical use.

Get your city and county occupational license.

Apply for a waste generator permit.

Hire a waste removal company.

It's not that difficult. You will need a medical director. If your doing medical grade peels pharmacy's will not sell to you without a rx. Some pharmacy's will not even sell to the MD if they are not a derm! If your microderm eqipment is rated medical grade you also need an MD. Performing medical tx without an MD is called practicing medicine without a license.

Are you allowed to set up in your own home? Either do a visiting practice or fix a clinic in your home.
