Montgomery College, Fall 2011, 1st semester students

Published

Here is our new thread ladies (Nikki, Andrea, Kristian, Marissa...and whoever else will be starting at MC this fall).

Oh, finally got a reply this morning about my packet being received. TG, thought I'd have to stalk the dept like some crazed person.

I did order the backpack. I went with the brown one and saved myself some money. I compared the high sierra and the jansport and the jansport was like 3 lbs lighter and a little bigger. Plus with all the reviews it seemed more logical to go with Jansport. I think the sierra brand was a bit pricier overall too. It takes awhile to arrive but should be here in time for school.

My son just turned 6. He loves sports but is afraid of competition and losing. He started with soccer and hated it. BUt that was before his sensory issues were addressed. Since then he has done t-ball twice and basketball once. He LOVES basketball. It's a shame he is soooo tiny for his age. I'm hoping to enroll him in karate here soon. I won a silent auction at his school for a month of free lessons and also got the same deal through groupon. So we have 2 free months.

His swim class is only a total of 5 kids with 2 instructors so there really isn't any waiting around. They just hug onto the floating barbells. DH insisted on the lessons. I never had a single one and I can swim. But we lived in AZ where you are basically in your own pool all summer long. We don't have that advantage here.

Just ordered another book from half.com. Says Like New w/unopened resource cd. Hopefully no problems this time.

I keep asking DH if he's asking for Tues off yet. He still hasn't done so. I'm worried he isn't going to be able to take it off if he keeps procrastinating. His staff is very small now (basically him and one other guy) after budget cuts and the other guy is always taking time off for personal/family reasons.

Karate sounds great! I really want to get my son into that too. I hear it's really good at developing their attention/listening skills as well as instilling some discipline. The statistics of kids that do karate and have high school performance are phenomenal. The soccer and T-ball that my son have done are non-competitive (no games whatsoever) but we haven't tried basketball yet...maybe this winter. That's great that there's so few kids with 2 instructors. I used to struggle with 7 or 8 kids by myself! And this was at the YMCA! Hopefully they've changed the class structure since I was teaching 8 years ago...

I was thinking the Jansport would be better. I think I'm gonna go with that one too. I gotta see if we can swing $89.50 though! Did you order yours from Amazon?

So today people are coming over to inspect our house. For the last 4-5 nights, I've been hearing these extremely loud scratching/grinding/chewing noises coming from inside my bedroom!!! EWWWW!!! At first I thought it was something in the attic, maybe a raccoon. But we had someone come out on Monday who thoroughly checked the attic (he was up there for over an hour) and didn't find anything...no droppings, no nests, no insulation moved, nothing. So he suspects its in the walls. I made a recording of the noise and let him listen to it. He said it was possible it was a raccoon but that most raccoons don't go in the walls. He found mice activity in our basement. We had a huge bag of bird seed in the laundry room that had a hole in it and the sunflower seeds that trailed from the laundry room to behind the fireplace were all cracked open. I was SOOOO disgusted, I literally almost threw up. I know that many people have mice in the basement, but we've lived here for 13 years now and NEVER had a problem until now. I just want whatever is in my bedroom wall to be removed ASAP. They're bringing some kind of heat sensor camera so they'll be able to see the shape and size of it (hopefully it's still in there cuz I haven't heard it since 1:00am). Then they're gonna perimeter the house and seal off any and every crack/opening they find. Not sure what else they're gonna do but I've been cleaning THE HECK out of my house since Monday! I mean, beyond spring cleaning type of cleaning. Re-caulking everything, vacuuming corners I didn't even know were there, cleaning walls, closets, cupboards, etc. I get so paranoid about rodents and bugs...I can't stand them!!! So if it seems I haven't been on here lately...that's why! Lol

Oh yeah, and that bird seed is HISTORY! So is the corn feed we used for some of our plants (and anything else I found that had any kind of food/flavor in it!). We also have a wood pile on our lower basement deck that could be attracting some animal to nest there and that is DEFINITELY going this weekend. Not sure what we'll use in the fireplace now, but we won't be storing wood anymore that's for sure.

I'm glad Professor Matthews finally got back to you Kristian! I really want to e-mail her and ask if she received mine but I'm kinda scared she's gonna snap at me, or even worse ignore me totally! But I guess it's better to be safe than sorry...

I didn't get mine at Amazon Andrea. I got it here...

They don't have all the colors/patterns but it is $20 cheaper. I think the black one w/the blue/green stripes/plaid is decent.

Sorry to hear about your rodent walls. That would totally creep me out. I don't think I'd be able to sleep. I hope it gets resolved today.

Yeah, Karate is great. My brother loved it. Also, music is a great way to develop other skills and they say kids who play an instrument tend to have a better learning curve. I guess that's why we were "forced" to learn how to play the piano since age 4. I couldn't wait to get through the 2hrs of practice and exercises so I can play w/ my friends!! Of course as kids we don't truly appreciate what our parents do for us.

Most homes have a rodent or two living somewhere in the house. We've found a field mouse in our basement a couple times. We used to have a raccoon that would raid our backyard trashcan, had to secure the lid. Went outside one night to discard a trash bag and there it was, just stood there staring at me. At that point I thought, great I'm gonna get attacked and have to get rabies shots...luckily it just walked away as it kept turning back to give me "the evil eye" for locking it out of its food source.

We had rats in our backyard at one point. Sadly, I thought they were cute but DH eradicated them. I've also seen an opposum going through our recyclables, steal a milk jug and gnaw on it in the grass. I've seen chipmunks hiding out under our foundation on the front stoop. But luckily, knock on wood, I have not seen/heard rodents in the house.

Although, not rodents, we did have birds nesting in our exhaust fan. We took care of that too. I felt horrible becuase it turned out there were babies in there. They weren't supposed to harm the animals. The guys said he didn't know until after the fact. The really sad thing is that you could hear the birds coming back time and time again, relentlessly trying to get back in. Seriously saddened me.

Nikki, that's so sad.

One thing that really bothers me is the use of poison, that's a horrible, painful death. (Don't mean to offend any one who's used this.) We had a situation (relative's home) where our dog found a block of rat poison. He brought it out to my husband, TG! but not before nibbling on it-could see his teeth marks. Frantic trip to the emergency vet. Poor thing went through so much that day and the activated charcoal gave him terrible diarrhea all night.

Not sure if I posted this one before. Yes, back to the great watch debate.

I just don't think I want to spend a lot on a watch. I don't normally wear one because I'm a stay home mom or if I am out I will just look at my phone. So I suspect the only time I will use it is during clinicals when I can't have my phone. I've seen some timex digital watches for less than $15 on amazon. But I do still like that plum timex with the silver/metal face. But I don't need all those fancy features ($$$).
