Montefiore School of Nursing fall 2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi, is there anyone applying to MSON for the upcoming fall semester?

I called the school earlier today and was told that the packets still haven’t been sent out. Complete opposite of what we were told a few weeks ago.

Seriously thinking about committing to another school because at this point this is just ridiculous. I completely understand that everything is moving slow due to the pandemic but the inconsistency and the lies that are being passed around is almost irritating.

Can I ask what you didn't like about Pace? I was thinking of applying there.

For me it wasn't one single thing, or one big issue, it was the little things that started to add up quickly. Also, I was in the Accelerated Program. This is only my experience in that program not the traditional. I was taking 6 classes plus clinical one day a week, plus simulation lab class.

Number 1. They didn't inform us prior to the start of the program that the grading style changed for the Spring 2020 semester. For example, you need a 78 test average in each class in order to pass. Now, say there was a paper due and some quizzes and homework... none of that was applied to your overall grade if you didn't first reach the 78 exam average. So, even with a 100 on a paper and perfect scores on a few quizzes it doesn't matter if you don't first reach 78 from the exams. On the other hand, let's say you reached the 78 test average, but didn't do so hot on the papers or homework you can also fail this way, too, because because it would drag your grade down. This new information was disclosed on the first day of class instead of during orientation before classes started.

Number 2. You have to buy this really expensive software. AND I MEAN REALLY EXPENSIVE. Well, for me it was costly. You not only have to buy online softwares to do some lab work. But you have to BUY ALL YOUR TEXTBOOKS from the online company because Pace has a partnership with them. The books are costly 350 for med-surg, 300 for fundamentals... But it does have a lot of helpful features. You can also pay an additional fee for the hard copy textbooks, because all the books you buy come as a e-text. Also, teachers will assign homework from the online software so you were forced to buy it. You will easily spend 8k or more on this. At this moment, I should have run for the hills.

Number 3. This isn't only a Pace thing, but Pace just isn't as up front about their areas of weakness. I chose the Pace program in Pleasantville b/c I was hoping to be placed in hospitals in Westchester County. Well, let me tell you... IT won't HAPPEN. Students were placed in Queens, Brooklyn, Lower east side (Manhattan) and I was in Harlem. Most of us lived in Ossining, Tarrytown, Pleasantville, Yorktown, and Somers and some students from fu*king Yorktown had to travel to Queens. They lost a clinical placement, they are no longer able to send students to New York Presbyterian. This was something else never told to us. They did, however, say in the group interview be willing to travel to NJ, CT, and all over NYC. I just thought it wouldn't happen to me... so, that one was on me.

Number 4. Good luck getting someone to take accountability there. You reach out to one person via email, they will reply back telling you to contact this email of someone you never met, or talked to. You will be passed along from person to person, and it can become a frustrating experience especially when you're paying 60k just in tuition. I didn't have many issues there, but when I did... there was no one that really stop and said "let me help this student." Or if I brought up an issue about placement no one had "availability."

Just keep in mind you don't need to attend an expensive program. An RN is an RN no matter where he/she goes. However, make sure your program is accredited, and check the stats on the NCLEX pass rate.

Best of luck!

Oh WOW!, thanks for updating us. I wonder why they don't send out emails to the prospective student that already paid the security deposit? They could easily inform us that there has been a delay with sending out the packets.

At this point, I'm cool with just picking up my packet up from the school rather than waiting 3 years for them to ship them.

Hi everyone, I plan on applying for the Spring 2021 semester. I was looking at the website and I don't understand the "challenge exam" portion. Is everyone required to take that?

I don't know how to answer that. I'm part of the Fall class of 2020. Due to the pandemic, we didn't have to take any "challenge exam" or "entrance exam" such as: TEAS, Kaplan, or HESI. I would suggest you call the school to get clarification.
