Moms in the Las Vegas Area

Published

Okay, so I had posted a little while ago about being accepted to UNLV, but not wanting to go because I'm a single mom (well, sortof-I have a SO), and my family is here in Washington.

I am now revisiting the idea of the big move. Long story short, my SO doesn't like Seattle, and wants to move. He has also been accepted to UNLV, and his mom lives in Las Vegas (who would be able to provide a little help, but not much). This coupled with the fact that it's nearly impossible to get into a program in Wa, makes me want to rethink Las Vegas.

I have a couple questions about how student moms deal with child care, especially with the "track system" that the school districts have there (this is a foreign concept to me, we just have the 9 month schools here). What do you do if you're child has a break from school when you don't? Also, are there many after school programs? My little girl will just be entering kindergarten, and if she ends up in a half day program this could be an issue.

Any info would be helpful, along with any kind of state programs for health insurance. I know of the one through UNLV, but it's pretty expensive. Feel free to respond here, or pm me.

BIG thanks :kiss

i live in wisconsin around duluth minnesota, there are no jobs within like 400 miles of here for nurses. we are booked for staff at our local and not so local hospitals. I was just wondering what nurses get paid there and the chances of getting a ob job would be, how about the cost of living? just a little curious, getting a little depressing around here with no jobs available. thanks

You probably wouldn't have any trouble finding a job in OB. I know Sunrise hospital just had a big nursing fair and 2 other hospitals are opening so I wouldn't worry...there are jobs a' plenty. Cost of living....I'm going to say I think it's VERY cheap here...but I came from San Diego. However the housing market is going through the roof...my house gained 40K in 1 year...insane! I think RN's here get paid around 24 and hour and up but not 100%

DieTryin' same here, you can write if you have any questions regarding LV! The Lakes is a really nice area so I am sure you will be happy there, or wherever you end up. Let me know if you wanna know more about UNLV or anything K? I will try to help as much as I can... You may wanna contact the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce to find out more local info ( I had to do a project on it!) So that might help. Well, everyone else have a great day and I am sure I will be posting more questions about school soon enough! Take care...

wanttodonicu, I am not too keen on average nursing wages in LV, but I know that Nevada is the leading state for Nursing shortage as of now, so I am sure you could have your pick amongst the Hospitals out here. Like iliel mentioned, the cost of living is pretty cheap compared to other places and they are building up a storm out here! I am afraid the desert may be gone soon! JK I have seen so many hotels go up since I have been here, it is amazing. LV seems like a pretty big city, but the medical community is very familiar with one another as I have learned. Good luck to you...
