Anyone else accepted and confirmed? I'm so excited I can hardly stand it! September is so far away! I'm just itching for more information/registration/timetables but thats still a few months away! :)

That time table looks pretty amazing never had a week day off! 6:30am start for the clinical might be a shock to my system, how have you found the clinical Vintageandrea? and where did they send you?

Hi guys...

Just to add my $0.02, I've had a day off each semester (I'm now finishing semester 3). It does ease up a little bit time-wise as you go along too (ie- lab goes to 3 hrs after semester 1, and fewer classes overall), but the work becomes quite a bit more difficult. Not to scare you... it all feels very overwhelming at first, but you will get the hang of it, I promise! The early starts at clinical are a drag, no doubt, but just wait until you start doing 12 hour clinicals! That's a new kind of tired. :D But again... you will get through it!

I hope you don't mind me jumping in here.

Hi everybody!I am new here and I hope new at the mohawk college. But before getting in, I am having pre admission testing and if any of you remembered what quetions are on the test and what is the best way to prepare for it would be very appreciated.I come in Canada 7 years ago, finished for dental assistant and now after 2 kids want to change profession.Sorry to interupt in your discussion but please help me.

If by pre-admission testing you mean the Health Occupation Aptitude Examination, the best advice i can give is do the sample questions on this page, Test Resources - The Psychological Services Bureau make sure to do the right ones. There are books out there but the one that I ended up getting was far more advanced than any of the question that were in the test. The questions where very similar to the ones in the samples.

I'm sure those that are more knowledgeable than me will help out and let you know more about nursing as a profession and if its the change you hope it will be.

Regarding the HOAE- from my personal experience, I did not feel like there was any way to prepare myself for the exam. The questions were very universal and general, and it's hard to say how you will find the test, it depends on your background and level of proficiency in basic math, general science, reading comprehension and spelling.

From my recollection the math was basic (fractions, percentages, decimals, ratios) and the science was very general and was mostly biology based, but very basic, no advanced biology, nor was there advanced physics/chem. Just general science questions.

Oddly enough I found the spelling part to be difficult because the words were so obscure (I have a Communications degree too!).

Good luck. Don't stress too much, in my opinion there isn't a tonne of preparation you can do for it. The link posted above is a good resource though to show you what style of questions to expect, but personally I found that some of the questions in that sample exam were pretty advanced.

:)

Thank you very much,I will try my best, but I am scared about communication and spelling because the english is my second language. So now is time to start preparations for exam.

Hi Stoyana, English is also not my first language and I didn't do well at all in the spelling and vocabulary part of the test. Try to make up on the other subject areas. What I found most difficult about the test was the timing. It was so stressful to have that timer ticking. I didn't have time to answer all the questions and guessed about 25% when I only had a few seconds left. I was sure I had failed. I cried all the way home. For some miraculous reason I passed. I think I did ok in the other areas of the test that were not directly related to the English language. However I believe what saved me was the fact that I had extremely high grades for my pre-requisites. What counts in the end is your final average. After all that stress I did well in the communications test and ended up with 6/8 for essay and 110/120 for reading comprehension. Not bad for someone whose English is a second language (third actually LOL) and almost failed the HOAE test. That timer was a killer!! Good luck and my advise would be to practice the questions with a timer so you get used to it.

starfish, help me understand something!

I will register on Monday. Do you get to pick your schedule entirely? Or is it just assigned to you? The whole day off thing works great for me as I need (and want!) to work as much as possible (I work for Hamilton Health Sciences and just want to soak in as much as I can from the nurses that I work with/around).

Did you do any of your placements at a Hamilton Health Sciences site? Or are you possibly doing your 4th semester placement at one?

Did you pick tues/weds or thurs/fri for your placements? And once you pick a set of days, are your placements on those same days for every semester or can you change it when you register next semester?

Everything just seems so vague and confusing! I just want someone to lay it all out for me step by step as I'm a planner and it feels like NOTHING is able to be controlled at all! That drives this analytical freak absolutely insane!!!

Thanks for any help you can give me! I greatly appreciate it!

Stoyana,

The HOAE isn't a hard test per se, but it's BROAD. Like the science part was crazy! It covered numerous subjects and science is so broad anyway, it was hard to study for. I did really well on all the other parts and only got one wrong in the spelling section (I was pretty proud of myself!). But it's a combination of your grades and your HOAE scores that ranks you for acceptance to the program.

I found a website online where people post their own study notes for certain things and someone posted some HOAE study notes and that's what I used. I also bought an HOAE study guide and did all the math sections so I could brush up since I'd not been a student in 15 years!

Quizlet is the website where people post their study notes.

The book I bought was: Health Occupations Entrance Exam: Amazon.ca: LearningExpress Editors: Books

I really do feel it helped, except for science. The study notes I found were more helpful with science.

And hello to everyone that is starting in January! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone! :D

I was wondering if many of you would be going into Mohawk tomorrow Monday 3rd to register and if any would be interested in meeting to share war stories....

I'm under the impression we had to register online. Also a question about scrubs. Do we need to buy some before classes start? And if so what kind and where do we get them.
