Mixing Lantus Insulin

I would like for you to help squelch a debate between my co-workers. We know not to mix Lantus with regular insulin or any other med...however we are argueing about the reason. Co-worker says that it is because it will make patient sick. I was taught in nursing school it is because of danger of mis-dosing, contaminating other meds with lantus causing basement blood sugar. Not interested in debating issue just want to know if anyone has oops and given it with regular or heard first hand why not. Would not be the first thing I was misinformed on in nursing school. Anyone have any experience with it, sorry...I always wanna know WHY!

In order to confirm drug information, you need to go to a reputable source:

a. Drug companies website

b. Drug book

c. Pharmacist associated with your facility

d. Drug store printout/drug insert

All can be done online these days...especially with a search engine like google.

From Adventis (Manufacturer) website:

LANTUS MUST NOT BE DILUTED OR MIXED WITH ANY OTHER INSULIN OR SOLUTION. If mixed or diluted, the solution may become cloudy, and the onset of action/time to peak effect may be altered in an unpredictable manner.

All I can find in my drug guide is not to mix with any other insulin...may be because of increased risk of wrong dosage...can't tell you right now....

Sorry :)
