Missouri. Can a new graduate NP work?

Specialties NP

Published

Hi. I am student NP. I am scheduled to graduate in August. My preceptor told me that she worked as a graduate NP after she took a board while she waited for her licence. I searched everywhere including Missouri board of nursing and AANP. I even emailed them, but nobody has been responded yet. Where can I find that information?

Thank you.

I don't know if you will ever find specific information regarding your question other than the fact that in any state, a nurse practitioner can only refer to himself/herself as such after receiving the state approved official designation as an NP. Anyone, who do not possess that designation will be practicing out of scope if performing the role of an NP.

Having said that, there are those who have started employment as a new grad prior to taking the boards or receiving their state's NP license. In these situations, the new grad's role is limited to RN specific functions under the direction of a licensed provider (MD, DO, NP, or PA) who signs off on all the provider-related activities in each patient encounter involving the new grad.

usually picking up the phone and calling them works wonders.

Just don't dial 1800-allnurses again, because this isn't the best place to pic up state specific info.

PP got me doing some research and I take my original response back.

You can actually get a temporary APRN license in MO. Per Missouri State Board of Nursing Rules Division 220 Chapter 4:

"A person who has graduated from an advanced nursing education program may be recognized by the Missouri State Board of Nursing as a Graduate Advanced Practice Registered Nurse for up to four (4) months from the date of graduation, pending a certification decision by an acceptable nationally recognized certifying body.” [20 CSR 2200-4.100

(3)(B)]

Graduate APRNs must [c]ease advanced practice nursing immediately upon notice that they have not successfully completed the certification process for any reason; and … [n]otify the board within five (5) working days of the receipt of the results of their certification application.” [20 CSR 2200-4.100 (5)]
