Missing out on family time - Looking for work outside the hospital

Dear Nurse Beth,

I know you get a lot of questions so I hope you can help me. I am an RN with a ASN I have 3 daughters and I am currently working full time on a Mother Baby Unit. I have been here a year after being out of nursing for 5 years being an at home mom. I feel the full time was okay even though I have been part time at my other 2 positions right out of nursing school. I keep hearing of all the opportunities for nursing outside of the hospital but I haven't come across them. I live near Richmond VA any doctors offices they want LPNs or BSNs so what can I do. I am missing out on family and all the holidays we are being forced to work is upsetting. I look back at how I kept running from being a nurse I see why.

Have you looked at any outpatient clinics or hemodialysis centers?

Outpatient surgery centers offer fairly regular hours, if you are open to

learning a new field. You would get to be home for family holidays

and still keep up your nursing skills.

If at all possible, start working on your BSN. As your girls grow, their

needs will change but the more options you have, the more flexible you can be.

Public Health, for example, provides good working hours and pay but typically

you'll need your BSN.

Civil Service facilities offer stability & routines. Depending on the area & facility, open positions may be avail or quite scarce.
