Mishaps in nursing school

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello,

As we know the expense for the equipment for patients are little to none. Well, as we went through school we were taught if a piece of equipment falls on the floor or becomes dirty, throw it away and get another one. Do you wonder who will be charge for careless mistakes of equipment?

Well, a nursing student used five foleys for the procedure of placing a foley. Now, would you think the student should had study or practice on the manaquin a little more?

Do you remember if you had any mishaps in nursing school you would love to share with everyone?

I went through fifty disposal wash cloths cause the person was not clean and I was afraid of receiving a failing mark for bed bath.

Ok, please contribute to the post of the mishaps in nurisng school.

Thank you,

Cleanest patient buttons?

Hello,

Yes, 99 is the cleanest patient and she loved her bed bath. The water was change several of times and I had two basins (one for bathing and one for rinse).

Nurs should be able to take credit for her foleys and 99 did you tell her the wrong procedure?

Have a great day and evening,

Yeah, I really had a hard time with my first real foley and Button told me a better way to insert it and I am greatful. Practicing on mannicans is not the same.

One of the mishaps we had in nursing school was during a med pass, not a good time for a big mistake, huh? Anyway, myself and two other students were on one cart for the med pass. We were to divide the patient load between the three of us and get it done. Well, one of the other girls (Student nurse) had gotten an inhalation med ready for a neb. tx. that she was supposed to give. Instead of going ahead and completing the procedure she handed the dose cup to one of the other students and said "give this to patient such and such in room 123" with no other explaination. The other student nurse took it and gave it to the patient ORALLY instead of as an inhalation tx. The initial nurse who had handed it off realized the mistake and came to me about it. The patient was in obvious respiratory distress after drinking a nebulizer medication so I went immediately to report it so emergent intervention could take place. Oh boy were those two students ticked off at me for reporting it. One of them failed the entire program (rightfully so) after not reporting their behavior, the nurse that took the medicine and actually gave it to the patient was so upset over it, but didn't fail, the one who didn't complete the procedure failed. Both were irate with me for telling, but if that patient had died I would have felt worse for not reporting it, so oh well. It's scary how stupidity can kill someone so quickly.

I've wasted several foleys before. I've been a nurse for over 30 years, and I've found that not everyone's anatomy has a textbook appearance.

I'm not sure what you're saying about "who should be charged" for the cost of the foleys, but IMHO, the hospital or nursing home absorbs those costs.

That's just part of the side effects of caring for patients.

I accidentally waste stuff all the time, if it hits the floor it goes in the trash. Most of what I waste tho, are like medication cups, drinking cups, because some people tear open the wrong end and invaribly I'll pick up the wrong end and they'll fall out. And, YES, I've wasted medications, in addition to foleys.

Accidents happen. Trash em.

Oh well nurse, my helper may still be running backwards down the passage with the patient, to who knows where? ha-ha

I cannot imagine using 5 foleys for one procedure! I think she needs more practice. If the patient was female though, some have difficult anatomy to decipher. I would say get aquainted with where the urethra is on that particular patient during cleansing and then complete it. If the pt. is male, well I don't know what the problem is there.
