Hello!
I have recently decided to pursue a career in nursing. I have a BA in business (live in CA), and would like to do an accelerated bsn program. I was looking up which pre-reqs I would need, when I read that in order to be accepted at the university I would have to pass a background check.
I am 26 years old. In 2008, I was involved in two alcohol related crimes (age 21). I won't get in to the details, but my total charges were: assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm (that being my hands), criminal threats, anonymous phone calls, vandalism, DUI, open container. They were all reduced to misdemeanors.
I know by the charges you are probably thinking I am a crazy, angry person who does not deserve to even think about letting myself into society, much less become a nurse. However, most of these charges are outrageous comparative to what actually took place, but I pled guilty because I was scared, alone and ignorant of what I was doing when I made this life sentence. I am not a bad person. I don't drink anymore. I was really young and really dumb. I didn't hurt anyone, nor could I (I am a 120 lb, scrawny female).
Now I am a mom to two, have a full-time job at a non-profit organization and really want to do good by becoming a nurse. I am working on getting it expunged, even though I know it will still be visible.
My question is: Is becoming a nurse a feasible career taking my criminal background into consideration? Not only do I need to get into nursing school (which requires a check), but I have to pass the licensing boards approval as well. I have tried googling, and many people speak of becoming a nurse after a DUI or a felony charge. I can't find anything with MULTIPLE infractions (all within two months of each other, two separate incidents). I really really really want this, or ANYthing to better myself and my family, but it appears that I sealed my life away from becoming anything better than scum those five years ago. Advice please??

There's too many variables for anyone to give you a definite Yay or Nay. There's a thread here from one nurse with 23 misdemeanors who got licensed...and others where people with far less on their record than that were told "No."
To be honest, it is your state BON who will ultimately determine if you will be licensed...and they usually do not say Yay or Nay either until you actually apply for licensure. That being said, you could always drop them a note (do it anonymously if you prefer), tell them about your record and see what they say.

I wouldn't worry so much about licensure so much as being able to find a facility willing to employ you with seven misdemeanors. Nursing is already saturated and when push comes to shove, an employer would rather hire the new grad with no record over the new grad with a rap sheet.

I wouldn't let your past discourage you. The BON reviews each situation via a case by case basis. I have a past that isn't the best. However, I made major changes in my life. Have used my past mistakes to help others that find their selves in similar situations. I put my trust in God (prayed ALOT) and completed a nursing program. Answered all of the questions on the Application (truthfully), wrote my letter of explanations and was approved by the BON. I was also honest on my application when applying for a job. I applied for a "New Grad Program" position and went up against 100 others applicants. I got an interview and to my surprise was hired along with 10 others applicants. Don't ever get discouraged. With Jesus ALL things are POSSIBLE. The past is the past. I have 100% faith in God. I know that he gives me favor and has helped me use my past mistakes to help others that are in need. Don't let others bring you down or speak negativity into your life. If you can envision it, you can have it.
Pray about this and follow your heart.
God will guide you in the right direction.

I receive this in the name of Jesus!! This really spoke to me.
Amen. I just got back on this site to check updates. Yes, it is hurtful when people state negative things towards others life. Stay positive. I know many people that I have helped due to my past mistakes. People that have been through hard times in life seem to have more compassion and love within their heart. They are not quick to point fingers, disregard others feelings or speak negativity onto others. They are the first to forgive, see the bright side of every situation and open their hearts to others that are down in life.
Stay focused. Stay positive. Pray A LOT. Let God guide you. You will not be let down.
It hurts my heart that the lady above posted so much negative words towards the original poster.
I personally applied to a new grad program and I have a criminal history. Went up against 100 other applicants. I was picked thanks to the favor of God.
I give all praise to God.
He never forsakes us or leaves us. He knows our heart. He will give you favor in the situations that favor is needed.
I had many doubts about my future. However, I pushed those fears aside and always pondered upon the words "If God is for us, it doesn't matter who is against us"
Psalms 46:10 Be still and know that I am God
Phillipians 4:13 With Jesus Christ, all things are possible.
Stand upon those words and never doubt. When one door closes another will open. Don't ever forget that.
Where is the offering plate because you just gave a word!!! Thanks for reminding me that I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me .

I hope you decide to go for it. My friend had two misdemeanors when he was young and dumb and now he is one of the best nurses I know. Just work hard and prove everyone who doubts in you wrong. I know you can do it. If you are kind and compassionate the rest will come with hard work and dedication. People that are nurses should be much more understanding that everyone deserves another chance, and those that aren't don't have the compassion like you do to be a great nurse. So go for it, you can do it! :)
