Military Police to Nursing...

U.S.A. Maryland

Hello everyone, I have a concern. I will soon be discharged from the U.S. Navy, and I was wondering how soon can I apply for my Post 9-11 GI Bill? I've heard horror stories of it taking forever to recite your benefits. Thanks in advance ladies and gents...

If you know what school you want to go to, you should be able to apply online now. This will get you in the system and they will determine your eligibility. Then the VA liaison at your school will start billing the VA at whatever percentage you rate. You will also start receiving your housing and book stipend.

This is something you have to stay on top of. The longest process is usually the initial application to the VA. After that, as long as your liaison doesn't suck, your benefits will come in on time every month.

Thank you so much! Great help sir! Are you currently in school? And where?

I attend Villanova University, but I saved my GI Bill for my Masters.

I used the Post 911 GI Bill for my undergraduate degree. It is a great program that allowed me to graduate debt free. Be aware though that initial processing times take forever. As example I first applied in August and received a back pay check for tuition and housing in December. I used the program while getting my ADN and they were always late and I had to pay tuition out of pocket and then I was reimbursed. Once I switched to my local university though they waived the tuition and allowed me to attend classes while they waited for payment. I know several vets that had to drop from school because of the inability to pay the tuition and couldn't wait for the housing allowance. This is a great program that you earned they are just very slow and not helpful or understanding when you call. My heart aches for the troops who cannot attend or have to drop bc the government or schools ineptitude.
