I currently work for the VA hospital but I'd like to try different government jobs after my first year of nursing. I'm young and I like the idea you can work abroad on a military base. What is it like working as a civilian nurse? work environment, nurse/patient ratio's, is it more stressful? Is the salary similar to working for the VA? So far, I love my job for the VA. It's not stressful and everyone has been really great to work with. I'm afraid if I leave I won't get the same VIP treatment!

Unless things have changed, which is always possible. You don't get housing allowance unless you are hired from the states. The catch is there is so many spouses already in country looking for work they hire from the local pool - therefore no housing allowance was given.
